Impossible:

  • saved the last Polaroid production plant for integral instant film in Enschede Netherlands (2008)
  • invented and produced new instant film materials for traditional Polaroid cameras
  • saved analog instant photography from extinction by releasing various, brand new and unique instant films (2010)

The Impossible Instant Lab is:

  • a new analog instant device that turns digital iPhone images into real analog instant photos on Impossible film, using an accompanying Impossible iPhone app
  • one of the very first hardware concepts using the Impossible FPU (Film Processing Unit) which will serve as the basis for a range of new analog instant gear to be introduced in 2013
  • demonstrated in this video which presents “Impossible Instant Lab by The Impossible Project”:

The Impossible Instant Lab is designed to transform any digital image via your iPhone into an instant photo that is exposed using only the light from the display, then processed and developed by chemicals:

  1. Select an image from the Instant Lab app
  2. Place the iPhone in the cradle
  3. Slide open the shutter on the base
    • A signal tells you when the exposure is finished

  4. Close the shutter
  5. Push the button
    • The Instant Lab ejects your photo, ready to develop in the palm of your hand

  6. Collapse the tower and the Instant Lab is fully portable and ready to go

    THE OVERVIEW
•A nine city touring mobile photography exhibition shot exclusively on iPhone and printed with Instant Lab
•Each of the nine shows in the tour will be curated by Tiny Collective
•The tour will feature the original mobile street photography of all 10 Tiny Collective members
•Every show in the tour will consist of 100 unique images, no show will be the same
    THE PARTNERSHIP
    • As presenting partner The Impossible Project will anchor their worldwide launch of Instant Lab to Tiny Collective’s existing pool of content
•This partnership will showcase the artistic scope of Instant Lab while aligning with press-worthy events via an international touring photo exhibit curated and produced by Tiny Collective
    THE PROCESS
•On every opening night of the tour each show will be entirely live-printed, on-site using a single iPhone and Impossible Project’s new product Instant Lab. As the images are printed, they will be hung in succession until the 100th picture is in place on the wall. At this time the show will be considered open in this city
•Having the shows printed on-site will demonstrate the remarkably flexible qualities of Instant Lab. This will be a unique and credible method of promoting the launch of Impossible Project’s new product while bringing attention to a new collection of Tiny Collective work
