“This exhibition, established in 1937, has received recognition by the Photographic Society of America (PSA), and is considered one of the leading international exhibitions in the world. Although shown for only 17 days, it is viewed by a million or more people from the greater Puget Sound area in the state of Washington, who come to see the latest and best in photographic art. Since its inception, we have encouraged a high degree of personal expression.”

  • The exhibition is open to anyone; however, an entry may be rejected when the sponsoring organization, or its agent, in its reasonable discretion, believes the entry does not conform to exhibition rules and conditions.
  • You may enter one image per Class, 01 through 04; in other words you may enter up to four images in each division.
  • Digital images must be submitted on a disc and discs will not be returned.
    • Do NOT send digital images via email.
  • Unless prior arrangements are made prints will be destroyed after October 3 2014.
  • Exhibition Catalog will be posted online at thefair.com by October 17, 2014.
  • Photographic Society of America (PSA) Medals to be awarded by the judges for “Best of Show” in each PSA division, plus one for “Human Interest” in photojournalism. Ten PSA medals awarded by divisions of the Photographic Society of America for:

    • Best-of-Show Monochrome Print (Large)
    • Best-of-Show Color Print (Large)
    • Best-of-Show Monochrome Print (Small)
    • Best-of-Show Color Print (Small)
    • Best-of-Show Photojournalism Print (Small)
      • “Photojournalism entries shall consist of images or sequence of images with informative content and emotional impact, including human interest, documentary and spot news.
      • The journalistic value of the image shall receive priority over pictorial quality.
      • In the interest of credibility, images that misrepresent the truth and model or staged set-ups are not permitted.
      • Techniques that add to, relocate, replace or remove any element of the original image, except by cropping, are not permitted.
      • Techniques that enhance the presentation of the image, without changing the photojournalism content are permitted.
        • All adjustments must appear natural.”
    • Best-of-Show PID General
    • Best-of-Show Nature
      • “Nature photography is restricted to the use of the photographic process to depict observations from all branches of natural history, except anthropology and archeology, in such a fashion that a well informed person will be able to identify the subject material and to certify as to its honest presentation.
      • The story telling value of a photograph must be weighed more than the pictorial quality while maintaining high technical quality.
      • Human elements shall not be present, except where those human elements enhance the nature story.
      • The presence of scientific bands, scientific tags or radio collars on wild animals is permissible.
      • Photographs of artificially produced hybrid plants or animals, mounted specimens, or obviously set arrangements, are ineligible, as is any form of manipulation that alters the truth of the photographic statement.
      • No techniques that add to, relocate, replace, or remove pictorial elements except by cropping are permitted.
      • Techniques that enhance the presentation of the photograph without changing the nature story or the pictorial content are permitted.
        • All adjustments must appear natural.
        • Color images can be converted to grayscale monochrome.
        • Infrared images are not allowed.”
    • Best-of-Show Authentic Wildlife Nature
      • “Authentic wildlife is defined as one or more organisms living free and unrestrained in a natural or adopted habitat.Therefore, landscapes, photographs of zoo or game farm animals, or any living subject taken under controlled conditions are not eligible for Wildlife competitions.
      • Authentic wildlife is not limited to uncontrolled zoological subjects.
      • Land and marine botanical subjects in the wild (including fungi and algae) are also eligible subjects, as are animal carcasses.
      • The preceding definition of “Authentic Wildlife” is in addition to the general “Nature” definition.”
    • Best-of-Show Photo-Travel
      • “A Photo Travel image must express the feeling of a time and place, and portray a land, its distinctive features or culture in its natural state.
        • There are no geographical limitations.
      • Close-up pictures of people or objects must include distinguishable environment.
      • Techniques that add to, relocate, replace or remove any element of the original image, except by cropping, are not permitted.
        • All adjustments must appear natural.
      • Conversion to full monochrome is acceptable.
      • Derivations, including infrared, are unacceptable.”
  • Four Special Fair Medals for Originality awarded by the Washington State Fair in the following divisions:
    •Large Monochrome Print   • Large Color Print
    •Small Monochrome Print   • Small Color Print
  • Special Awards Ribbons awarded by the Washington State Fair in the following divisions:
    • Large Monochrome Print • Large Color Print
    • Small Monochrome Print • Small Color Print
    • PID General
    • Photojournalism (where noted with a (PJ) below.)
      • These ribbons will be awarded in the following categories, provided exhibitors submit prints/images that apply:
        • Scenic • Children (PJ) • Humor (PJ) • Portraits • Designs • Action (PJ) • Animals (PJ) • Human Interest
  • Judges’ Choice citations will be awarded to twelve outstanding images/prints in each division and sixteen Honorable Mention citations will be awarded in each division

“…The entrant permits the sponsors to reproduce all or part of the entered material free of charge for publication and/or display in media related to the exhibition. This may include low resolution posting on a website. Note: Entrants who indicate that their images may not be reproduced or used “may not be eligible” for awards or inclusion in audio-visuals of the exhibition “and could be subjected to disqualification by the exhibition sponsors”

Award-winning images will be included in the exhibition catalog posted on the Fair’s website.

“This exhibition is to showcase exclusively the work of Washington state photographers.”

  • This exhibition is open to Washington state residents.
  • Photographers may enter this exhibition and the Northwest International Exhibition of Photography, but they may NOT enter the same images in both exhibitions.
    • If the same image is entered by one photographer into both competitions, this will result in the disqualification of that image from both competitions.
    • Images previously accepted for exhibition at the Washington State Fair are not eligible for entry again.
  • Exhibitors must be age 16 or over.
  • An entry may not be accepted when the sponsoring organization or its agent, in its reasonable discretion, has deemed that entry inappropriate for display.

“…the exhibitor certifies the work as his/her own and permits the sponsors to reproduce all or part of the entered material free of charge for publication and/or display in media related to the Exhibition. Any modification of the original image must be made by the exhibitor subject to category restrictions in the Nature and Photo Travel Categories.”

  • One of the seven categories must be selected for each print for competition. If no category is designated on an entry, it will automatically be judged in the General (G) category.
    • Nature and Landscape (N) requires natural unaltered photos
    • People (P)
    • Places and Travel (PT) requires unaltered photos taken outside of Washington state
    • Animals (A) may include anything from pets to zoo animals
    • Around Washington (WA)
    • Carnivals and Fairs (CF)
    • Elements of Design (ED)
    • General (G) – non-specific
  • Prints will be privately judged by recognized photographers from throughout Washington State.
    • Results are not scored and judges’ decisions are final.
  • Results will be posted following completion of the judging (estimated before September 5) on the web site at thefair.com.
    • Scroll to the bottom of the home page and click on “Entries” then click on “Washington State Photographers Exhibition – Results.”
  • Each exhibitor may enter a maximum of four (4) prints total.
  • Entry fees must be paid online at the time of entry registration: $2.00 per print.
  • Mail or hand-deliver your prints: no prints will be accepted after 3 pm on August 5.

  • Awards
    • Rosettes will be awarded to one 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winner in each of the seven categories.
    • Additional ribbons will be awarded for “Judge’s Choice” (JC) and “Honorable Mention” (HM) winners.
    • A daily “People’s Choice” (PC) ribbon is also awarded and posted, as voted by Fair guests each of the 17 days of Fair.
    • The name of the person awarded “Best in Show” (BIS) will be added to the permanent plaque on display during Fair.
  • Because of space restrictions, approximately 35% to 45% of entries may be accepted for display at the Washington State Fair.
  • Special Event: TALK WITH THE JUDGES on Sunday, Sept. 7, time to be determined.
    • A representation of the judges will be on hand to talk with the public about the images in the gallery and to show and discuss what makes a good image in the judges’ eyes.
