The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ351 / FZ38 adds HD movie to its popular and award-winning FZ series of long zoom digital cameras. It features 12.1MP resolution (1/2.3-in. CCD), 18x wide-angle optical zoom (27-486mm equiv.), 2.7-in. LCD (230K dots), and a new POWER O.I.S.
(Optical Image Stabilizer) that helps reduce
camera shake at the long focal lengths. The long zoom reach allows
you to bring distant subjects close while the
ultra wide-angle lens allows you to include all your
friends in the picture or capture an architectural
or expansive landscape in a single shot.
The Panasonic FZ35 records HD movie of 720p in AVCHD Lite. Sound is recorded in Dolby Srereo, and a dedicated Motion Picture Button makes it convenient to switch to movie recording and back. The 18x optical zoom is available during video recording. Intelligent Auto and Scene Mode are also available in Movie mode, plus you can set the shutter speed and aperture manually, if desired.
The newly developed POWER O.I.S. also nearly doubles the hand-shake correction power of its previous MEGA O.I.S. Panasonic claims correctly exposed hand held night scenes are now possible with this new hand-shake correction image stabilizer technology.
Panasonic's digital cameras are well-known for fast performance and the new Ultra High-Speed AF in the FZ35 is now even faster than the one on the DMC-FZ28, which it replaces. Fast and accurate AF means you can catch the action at its peak moment.
For beginners, Intelligent Auto Mode activates seven detection and correction functions simultaneously (POWER O.I.S., Face Detection AF/AE, Face Recognition, AF Tracking, Intelligent ISO Control, Intelligent Scene Selector, Intelligent Exposure) to optimize camera settings.
Advanced photographers have full manual control with PASM modes, manual focus using the mini joystick, selectable AF, 2-axis WB adjustment, and RAW file format.
A large 2.7-in. LCD monitor (230K dots)
has a wide viewing angle and the Auto Power LCD function automatically adjusts the backlight brightness according to the ambient light intensity.
If you want even more zoom power, the optional telephoto conversion lens DMW-LT55 gives you zooming ability equivalent to 826mm (equiv.). The Lens Adaptor(DMW-LA3) is required for attachment of the telephoto conversion lens. Note that the uUse of the telephoto conversion lens limits the zoom area to 255 to 486mm. Other optiomal accessories are Close-up lens DMW-LC55 (3x magnification), ND Filter DMW-LND46 (3 Steps), and Circular Polarizing Filter DMW-LPL46 (eliminates glare to capture the vivid blues of skies and fresh greens of trees, as well as removing reflections when shooting through glass).
The Panasonic
Lumix DMC-FZ35 / FZ38 is a long zoom digital camera with full exposure flexibility, wide-angle coverage, ultra fast operation and a wealth of advanced features sure to please the proverbial point-and-shoot "soccer mom" as well as more demanding photographers. Now with HD movie!
If you want a more compact long zoom, you can purchase the DMC-ZS3 / TZ7 for the about same price and which has 12x optical zoom, a 3.0-in. (460K dots) LCD, records 1,280 x 720 HD movie @ 30fps with stereo Dolby sound, and is 103.3W x 59.6H x 32.8D mm (
4.07W x 2.35H x 1.29D in.), 206 g (0.45 lb).
If you are looking for the slimmest and most compact power zoom digital camera, for about $120 less, you can purchase the DMC-ZR1 / ZX1 which has 8x optical zoom, a 2.7-in. (230K dots) LCD, and records HD movie with mono sound -- and, at only 26mm (1.02 in.) thick, is pocketable.

** These are standard times taken at a temperature of 23°C (73.4°F) and a humidity of 50%. The time available for recording varies depending on the environment, the interval between recordings, and the manner of use. Actual recordable time is the time available for recording when repeating actions such as switching the power supply [ON]/[OFF], starting/stopping recording, zoom operation etc. Motion pictures and pictures with audio taken with the DMC-FZ35(FZ38) may not always be able to be played back with cameras by other manufacturers. Playback may also not be possible with certain Panasonic digital cameras (LUMIX) launched before December 2008, and some cameras launched in 2009 (FS, LS Series). Motion picture recorded continuously in [MOTION JPEG] is up to 2 GB. Only the maximum recordable time for 2 GB is displayed on the screen. Motion pictures can be recorded continuously for up to 29 minutes 59 seconds in European PAL area.
*** CIPA is an abbreviation of [Camera & Imaging Products Association]. Temperature: 23°C (73.4°F)/Humidity: 50% when LCD monitor is on. Using a Panasonic SD Memory Card (32 MB). Using the supplied battery. Starting recording 30 seconds after the camera is turned on. (When the optical image stabilizer function is set to [AUTO].) Recording once every 30 seconds with full flash every second recording. Rotating the zoom lever from Tele to Wide or vice versa in every recording. Turning the camera off every 10 recordings and leaving it until the temperature of the battery decreases. The number of recordable pictures decreases in Auto Power LCD Mode and Power LCD Mode.
