US-born, Toronto photographer Katy McCormick invites you to discover or rediscover Washington DC. Its grand design articulates a celebration of American identity and values.

Photographed and laid out with the idea of promenade in mind, her exhibition recreates the experience of a large complex by configuring images in order to convey cultural ideals, social histories, perceptual processes and, sometimes, questioning of historical narratives.

In her new body of work presented at the Alliance Française’s Pierre-Léon Gallery, US-born, Toronto photographer Katy McCormick examines the monumental core of Washington DC. Originally designed in 1791 by French architect and city planner Pierre Charles L’Enfant, the National Mall extends from the Capitol Building to the Lincoln Memorial. Its grand design articulates a celebration of American identity and values, while enabling a constant dialectic between the expression of national pride and the questioning of historical narratives.

Photographed and laid out with the idea of promenade in mind, her exhibition recreates the experience of a large complex by configuring images in order to convey cultural ideals, social histories, and perceptual processes.

Katy McCormick was born in Kansas City and has been living in Toronto since 1997. Her work explores the relationships between landscape architecture, cultural histories, and the way we perceive photographic representations of public spaces. Her solo exhibitions in Toronto galleries include Gallery TPW, Toronto Image Works Gallery, and The Photo Passage; her solo shows have also appeared in Saskatoon and Montreal. Recent publications include Border Country: Witnessing Testimonies (2010) “Emergence/Legacies,” in Emergence: Contemporary Photography in Canada (2009) and “Scene as Space Across Time,” in BlackFlash (2008). She is associate professor in the School of Image Arts, at Ryerson University, Toronto.
