Abby Sunderland, 16, Sails Solo Around The Globe
Abby Sunderland, the 16-year-old high-school junior from Thousand Oaks, California, has announced that she will stop at Cape Town, South Africa, for repairs to a faulty autopilot system. She had planned to sail nonstop but wisely and maturely decided that “It would be foolish and irresponsible for me to keep going with my equipment not working well.”
After repairs, Abby still plans to continue her journey to become simply the youngest person to solo-circumnavigate the world in a sailboat.
On her blog announcing the news, she writes, “This is the experience of a life time. It’s hard and sometimes down right terrifying, but I love it out here.”
