If you are looking for an affordable and easy-to-use first camera for a child, grandparent or for yourself, the Canon PowerShot A Series digital cameras are a good choice for the budget-conscious consumer. The Canon PowerShot A495 features 10MP resolution (1/2.3-in. CCD), 3.3x optical zoom (37-122mm equiv.), a 6.4-cm (2.5-in.) LCD display screen, and uses 2 convenient-to-find AA batteries. You can either use 2 Alkaline batteries (included) or optionally go Green with 2 rechargeable NiMH batteries.

For general purpose photography, Smart AUTO shooting mode analyzes your scene and automatically selects the appropriate setting. For more challenging shooting situations, match the scene yourself to the appropriate Scene Mode. For example, Night Snapshot scene mode sets the camera so you can take a night picture where the main subject (lit by flash) and the background (long exposure) are both recorded. You don’t have to rush back to get in line when taking self-timer group photos: Face Detection Self-Timer scene mode detects faces in the scene and releases the shutter in response to the appearance of an additional face. Low Light scene mode extends the high ISO up to 3200 when photographing without flash in dimly-lit situations. Long Shutter scene mode extends the shutter speed range from 1 sec. to 15 sec. for creative night photography.

For those who desire a bit more control, switch to Program AE (P) mode and dial in an exposure compensation to compensate for scenes that are too bright or too dark. Custom White Balance allows you to obtain the correct colors under artificial lighting situations.

For artistic photo effects, My Colors can record your pictures more Vivid, Neutral, Sepia, Black & White — or use Custom Color to adjust the contrast, sharpness and saturation to your taste. Use Super Vivid scene mode to get intense colors or get a posterrization effect using the new Poster Effect scene mode.

You can shoot VGA movie 640×480 pixels at 30fps with monaural sound for up to 1 hour or 4GB per clip.

There are two software applications that are included on the CD ROM that you’ll have to install on your computer: ZoomBrowser allows you to upload your pictures and videos from camera to computer, then view and edit them. CameraWindow allows you to easily upload your videos to YouTube directly from the camera or from your computer.

The Canon PowerShot A495 is a very basic entry-level point-and-shoot digital camera that is ideal for a first-time user. It is easy-to-use, comes in Blue, Red or Silver and, at about US $130 (CAD $150), is very affordable, too.

Here is how the four A Series models compare. They are basically the same except for MP resolution, optical zoom power, whether there is built-in image stabilization or not, display screen size, and a couple of scene modes.

  • I.VE OWNED THIS CAMERA FOR 2 DAYS & TO HAVE USED 3 PAIR OF BATTERIES TO OBTAIN 168 PHOTOS COULD ONLY BE DESCRIBED AS A VERY POORLY MADE IMITATION OF A TOY CAMERA. THIS IS ONE OF MANY CAMERAS I,VE OWNED & although i bought IT FOR OUTDOOR ALL WEATHER USE IT GOES DOWN IN MY OPINION TO BE THE WORST BIT OF CRAP I,VE EVER BOUGHT. DON,T BUY THIS FEEBLE TOY OF A VERY HUNGRY BATTERY CHEWING PEICE OF JUNK SOME-ONE HAD THE GALL TO REFER TO AS A CAMERA. OH & BY THE WAY THE RETAILER HAS REFUSED TO TAKE IT BACK OR EXCHANGE IT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES & I,M WOULDN,T EITHER IF I COULD GET OUT OF DOING IT.

  • Hi,

So sorry to hear about your bad experience with the Canon A495.

I believe the camera should be able to take about 150 stills shots on a full battery charge. If you take lots of videos or leave it on for a long time, that number will decrease. Also, use good batteries, not cheap ones.

If you’ve just bought the camera, you should be able to return it to any retailer. If the retailer is not willing, please post its name here.

Canon also guarantees the camera to be free from defects in materials and workmanship under normal use and service for a period of one (1) year from the date of original purchase. So do contact them:

We sincerely hope you get your problem resolved quickly and to your satisfaction from Canon.

  • I AM NOT NEW TO SLR DIGITAL CAMERAS AS I HAVE 2 OTHERS SONY A3500 & AN OLD BUT VERY RELIABLE CANON G5 POWERSHOT FROM WHICH I,VE PRINTED A3 SIZE PANORAMIC PHOTOS. FIRST BATTERIES CAME WITH THE CAMERA, 2ND, I BOUGHT MORE EXPENSIVE, THE LAST WERE LITHIUM NON RECHARGE-ABLE. I SHALL BE RETURNING THE CAMERA TO CANON. ASAP.

  • Stop complaining about the batteries. Cameras do not use ordinary batteries. I have tried the black Eveready batteries with this camera (Canon A495), and they lasted only five shots. That’s funny! Use rechargeable batteries. I have two pairs of Eveready rechargeables. Fully charged batteries gave me more than 400 shots.

This camera is not for those who want a nice, sleek design. You could have picked out any of the more expensive IXUS models.

Image quality is not bad for a camera this cheap, although you are warned to not expect good photos all the time. The lack of image stabilization makes shooting without flash a challenge. Also, I experienced that outdoor photos at 3.3x zoom are washed out. The Auto mode raises noise levels of indoor shots to 640 and 800, making indoor shots with and without flash noisy, especially in the dark regions of the photos. In broad daylight, the Auto mode is very reliable.

    Macro shots are awesome!
