QUICKFACT SHEET

The Canon EOS R8 is Canon’s most affordable and lightest full-frame mirrorless camera, providing a low price-point entry into full-frame mirrorless photography. It is compact, light and includes some of the best features from the more advanced (and more expensive) EOS R6 II.

The EOS R8 (Feb 8, 2023; US $1,499 body only) is basically the advanced-level EOS R6 II (Nov 2, 2022; US $2,499 body only) minus some features in an entry-level body similar to the EOS RP (Feb 14, 2019; US $999.99). From the EOS R6 II, it inherits the same excellent 24.2MP CMOS sensor, the super fast and accurate AF, the 40fps continuous shooting, and excellent video with uncropped 4K/60P. What differentiates the R8 from the R6 II are: The R8 has a lower resolution EVF with less magnification (R8: 2.36M dots, 0.70x magnification vs. R6 II: 3.69M dots, 0.76x magnification), no IBIS (In-Body Image Stabilization; R6 II: 8 stops), only one card slot (vs. two for the R6 II), a less powerful battery (R8: 290 shots vs. R6 II: 580 shots), and no AF joystick.

Still, the R8 has some impressive features:
– Excellent 24.2MP sensor for superior image quality
– Super fast and precise AF with People, Animal and Vehicle tracking
– AF is sensitive down to -6.5EV (which is almost complete darkness)
– 40fps Continuous Shooting and 1/16000 sec. electronic shutter make it easier to catch the action
– Vari-angle (fully articulated) 1.62M-dot Touchscreen LCD
– High-resolution 2.36M-dot OLED EVF with 120fps refresh rate and Optical Viewfinder simulation
– Uncropped 4K/60P Video; 4K/30P for 2 hours
– Full HD/120P for slow motion
– Interval Timer, Wireless Remote Shooting
– Ability to use the camera as a webcam or for streaming

The Canon EOS R8 is a no-brainer all-rounder if you are looking into moving up to a full-frame mirrorless camera on a friendly budget. If, however, you intend to do a lot of video shooting, you might want to consider upgrading to the Canon EOS R6 II with its more powerful battery (580 shots) and especially with its 5-axis 8 stops In-Body Image Stabilization.
