Canon PowerShot ZOOM Telephoto Monocular: For Hiking, Birdwatching, Nature Gazing… (and, shhh, Spying)

Spies always seem to carry a compact monocular telephoto lens to, well, spy on their targets. Canon has now made it easier and more comvenient to do so: the PowerShot ZOOM (it seemed that the marketing department simply ran out of naming ideas — MC-1 could have been an acceptable one?) features a 4x 100mm to 400mm (35mm equivalent) optical zoom, with a one-touch switchable function to quickly switch from a respectable 100mmto a lets-look at-his face-closer 400mm, plus a downright invasive 800mm digital zoom. Spies are rubbling their hands together in glee. Also, no need for a telescope in your Manhattan high rise anymore; thr compact and discreet PowerShot ZOOM is all you need.

See anything interesting (or mischievous) going on? No need to take out that DSLR with its huge long tele lens; the Powershot ZOOM can capture both still images and videos to a micro SD card. Just pair it with your smart phone and use the Canon Camera Connect app to easily download those incriminating files.

It features Face tracking AF, optical image stabilization, Full HD 1080/30p video, 12MP sensor, built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and a built-in microphone.

Tatsuro “Tony” Kano, executive vice president and general manager of the Imaging Technologies & Communications Group of Canon U.S.A., Inc. asks “We are eager to see how consumers use this tool and the convenience it will add to their daily lives.” Somehow we doubt that the PowerShot ZOOM is going to be much used in “hiking, birdwatching and nature gazing, … embracing the beauty of the outdoors.” Yeah, right! Unless, that is, you read Canon’s press release between the lines.
