Carmignac Photojournalism Award – 10th Edition’s Theme is the Amazon Rainforest and Issues of Massive Deforestation: Submit Proposal before 12am (GMT) on Sunday 7 of October 2018

The Carmignac Photojournalism Award was created in 2009 by the Fondation Carmignac. In each edition, photographers from all over the world are invited to respond to a chosen theme, for the creation of a long-form work of photo-reportage.

“The Fondation Carmignac chooses a region of the world where turbulences have had repercussions for the planet, or forgotten parts of the world, thereby underlining through this choice to highlight what is unique about the work of photography.”

The 10th Edition of the Carmignac Photojournalism Award aims to support an investigative photography project that will highlight the upheavals to the Amazon rainforest and encourage reflection of the consequences of massive deforestation.

Award

Carmignac Photojournalism Award funds annually the production of an investigative photo reportage on human rights violations, geostrategic and environmental issues in the world.

• Selected by an international jury, the laureate receives an endowment of 50,000 euros (US $56,750 at the current exchange rate), enabling them to carry out an in-depth reportage on the ground, with the logistical support of Fondation Carmignac.
• The latter presents a travelling exhibition and the publication of a monograph, upon their return.

Judging

• The pre-selection committee and the jury are independent from the Fondation Carmignac: they are made up of figures from the world of photography, journalists, experts on the chosen region, and directors or curators of museums or international institutions.
• The pre-selection committee and the jury are autonomous in their decisions, which are made by majority vote after deliberations have taken place. Their decisions are final.
• The pre-selection by the committee and the selection by the jury are carried out according to objective criteria, in particular relevance and originality.
• In order to guarantee the impartiality of the selection of the Winner, no member of the jury will be a Carmignac member of staff.

…The candidate acknowledges that, if its application is selected, he/she will have to sign an agreement which defines the terms and conditions of the transfer of Intellectual Property of approximately 60 to 90 photographs taken during the reportage. Such agreement must be acceptable for the Fondation Carmignac and shall at least include the worldwide right of use and reproduce those photographs in any media and any support, known or unknown, for the legal duration of copyright and for any communication purpose related to the Prix Carmignac du Photojournalisme.

…The candidate consents to the processing of his/her personal data solely for purposes of the Prix Carmignac du Photojournalisme. In accordance with Data Privacy Laws, the candidate have the right to access, rectify, update and/or ask the deletion of his/her personal data on legitimate grounds, by mail to Fondation Carmignac, 24, Place Vendôme, 75001 Paris France.

…The Winner, before accepting the Award, will inform the Commissioner General and the Fondation Carmignac of any ethical or moral incompatibility that may arise for him or her in the context of the realisation of the reportage, and the collaboration with the Fondation.

The report must be original, the Winner undertaking not to use material made in the context of another project that has taken place prior to the Award, and undertaking not to infringe intellectual property rights or third party image rights.

The Winner must deliver a project in accordance with the application he or she has submitted and for which he or she has received the Award, and as described in his or her application.

The Winner will not be able to use his or her reportage for commercial purposes in order to promote a product, brand, or an organisation, for the duration of his or her collaboration with the Fondation on the Award. He or she may only use a trademark in the course of his or her work after approval by the Fondation, and with the authorisation of the owner of the mark.

If, prior to or during the execution of the reportage, the safety and / or health of the Winner is threatened, or in the event of a significant deterioration of the geopolitical situation in the country where the reportage is taking place, the Fondation reserves – after consulting the Commissioner General and the Jury – the right to cancel the Award, to extend the participation period and / or to postpone the date of any announcement, at any time and for any reason. The Winner may also cancel his or her participation in the Award and must notify the Commissioner General and the Fondation.

The Fondation, the Winner, the Commissioner General and the Jury undertake to respect a confidentiality agreement as to the circumstances in which the project is taking place.

Participants will also respect a confidentiality agreement as to the identity of the Winner and the content of his or her reportage until disclosure on the dates that have been agreed….

The 10th edition of the Carmignac Photojournalism Award is dedicated to the Amazon and will address issues related to its deforestation.

The Amazon is a vast region covering the territory of nine nations: Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana. The region has a surface area of 5,500,000 km2 and is crossed by the Amazon river, the second longest river in the world and the largest by discharge volume of water. The Amazon alone accounts for half of the remaining tropical forests on the planet. It is home to 70% of the world’s biodiversity and to one in ten of the world’s species..

This territory is home to 30 million people, including 350 indigenous groups, most of whom live in their natural habitats, but the development of economic activities in the region mean that this ecosystem is under more threat than ever before.

Since 1999 at least 2,200 new species have been discovered in the Amazon biome, but with 17% of the Amazon’s surface area already destroyed, the rainforest is increasingly vulnerable. Responsibility for the degradation and destruction of this fragile natural environment lies with climate change, but also human activity. The consequences are multiple and both local and global: greenhouse gas emissions, destruction of biodiversity, hydrological alterations and even soil erosion.

This edition of the Carmignac Photojournalism Award aims to support an investigative photography project that will highlight the upheavals to the Amazon rainforest and encourage reflection of the consequences of massive deforestation.

Created in 2000 under the initiative of Édouard Carmignac, Fondation Carmignac, directed by Charles Carmignac, is a corporate foundation with an art collection of about 300 works. On June 2, 2018 the Fondation opened to the public in Porquerolles, a Mediterranean island like a floating forest on the sea. Visitors can discover contemporary artworks of the Carmignac Collection in the beautiful surroundings of a national park, along with temporary exhibitions, a sculpture garden, and a rich programme of cultural events.

THE JURY & SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

The jury of the 10th Edition of the Award, chaired by Yolanda Kakabadse, Minister of the Environment in Ecuador (1998-2000) and President of WWF (2010-2017), will meet on November 2018 in Paris.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
The designation of the laureate is carried out in two stages:
FIRST PHASE — The Pre-jury composed of photography, press and art world experts, has for mission to choose between 12 and 15 files among those received.
SECOND PHASE — The Jury composed of personalities specialized in the theme and contemporary image, aims to select a winning project.

After the selection, the jury will meet the winning photographer in order to speak to them and to provide, if necessary, the support they will require throughout their project – from the preparation stage of the report, to its final exhibition.

FONDATION CARMIGNAC

Created in 2000 under the initiative of Édouard Carmignac, Fondation Carmignac is a corporate foundation with two main strands: an art collection of close to 300 works, and the annual Carmignac Photojournalism Award. From 2 June 2018, Villa Carmignac, an exhibition space opened to the public on Porquerolles Island, Southern France, showcases the collection and hosts a programme of cultural and artistic activities.

The Collection, presented and shared since its creation inside the company’s offices, celebrates American art from the 1960s to the 1980s, with iconic works by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Jean-Michel Basquiat. The 20th and 21st centuries are surveyed with the incisive or more contemplative visions of Gerhard Richter, Willem de Kooning, Martial Raysse, Miquel Barceló or even Ed Ruscha, while the collection opens up new horizons with works by Zhang Huan, El Anatsui and those of the young emerging scene (Korakrit Arunanondchai, Theaster Gates …). Finally, photography and photojournalism complete this singular panorama, reflecting a personal history made of encounters and shared life moments.

On June 2nd 2018 , the Fondation opened to the public in Porquerolles, a Mediterranean island often compared to a floating forest on the sea. Visitors will discover contemporary artworks of the Carmignac Collection in the beautiful surroundings of a national park, along with temporary exhibitions, and a sculpture garden.

The island is not the result of a random decision: “As in all legends or initiatory journeys, the voyage to the island is always a dual crossing – both physical and psychological. It is about crossing over to the other side,” states the Director of the foundation, Charles Carmignac.

Once on the island, the visitor will discover a Provençal farmhouse blended into the landscape. Inside, the galleries expand to reveal 2,000 square meters of exhibition spaces. Natural light, filtered through a ceiling filled with water, illuminates the spaces hidden beneath the surface. Outside, a selection of works inspired by the surroundings is dispersed over a 15-hectare garden, conceived by landscape designer Louis Benech.

Located in the Var, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region, Southern France, the 7-kilometer- long, 3-kilometer-wide Porquerolles Island is part of the Hyères municipality and of the Port-Cros National Park. It is accessible by boat (a 15-minute crossing) and can be visited by foot or on bicycle. The site is at 680 steps from the port and the village, and 260 steps from the beach.
