Cine Gear Expo 2011: Film vs Digital CCD Capture

From KodakShootFilm

Rob Hummel, President of Group 47, explains how film records an image (“we” knew that, right, old timers?) and why it has such a greater dynamic range than CCD image sensors. Takeaway: Don’t talk about sensor resolution; go shoot pictures and evaluate the images! With image sensors, the algorithm (the “maths”) makes a big difference.

And, surprise [07:59], everytime you take your camera on an airplane, the image sensor loses photosites due to the gamma rays at altitudes of 20K feet [that induce voltages in the sensor that fry pixels]. That is why the major manufacturers ship their cameras to North America by boat.
