Japan Camera Industry Institute (JCII) inspects all cameras exported from Japan in order to maintain quality standards.
In addition to this inspection function, JCII in 1969 started to designate some cameras as “Japanese Historical Cameras” and began efforts to preserve these important items.
“Japanese Historical Cameras” serve as pages in the history of Japanese camera development, making it more accessible to the world.
Cameras which are considered significant in some regard are selected by the Historical Camera Committee, which is composed of unbiased experts and specialists in the field.
All new cameras released within the calendar year are eligible, with evaluation based on factors such as the first use of a new technology and popularity among consumers.Most “Japanese Historical Cameras” designated in past years are held in the collection of the JCII Camera Museum, which is run by the JCII, and many are on display.

The Historical Camera Committee is a review group established within the Japan Camera Industry Institute.
JCII Camera Museum’s highlights include:
- a collection of several thousand cameras;
- displaying various types of cameras from around the world in the Special Exhibition section which includes “classic,” “masterpiece” and “curio” cameras;
- a permanent display of historical and new cameras of Japan (Nippon)
(approximately 300 items); - preserving important information pertaining to the cameras;
- exhibiting all phases of the worldwide history of photography; and
- promoting the understanding of photography and film in the “JCII Photo Salon” and the “JCII Library”.
- JCII Photo Salon is the exhibition of photographs that create interest in Japanese photographic culture.
- JCII Library contains books related to photography.
Fujifilm announced that X-T1 and X100T cameras are elected as Japanese Historical Cameras by JCII Camera Museum.

We are pleased to announce that X-T1 and X100T are elected as Japanese Historical Camera by Japanese JCII Camera Museum.
The first use of a new technology and popularity among consumers are among the key factors to determine the selection, and “Multi Mode Viewfinder” for X-T1 and “Advanced Hybrid Viewfinder” for X100T were regarded as significant technological advancement.
They will be put on permanent display at the Camera Museum.

Special exhibitions are held every four months, “focusing on the functions of cameras, or the products of specific countries, to show every aspect of cameras for their enthusiasts.”
