The Fujifilm X-A5 is an all-around entry-level APS-C mirrorless camera that takes excellent stills images. Unlike higher-level X Series mirrorless cameras that use seperate analog-style Shutter Speed dial, Exposure Compensation dial and ISO dial, the X-A5 uses a conventional Mode dial. The X-A5 also uses a conventional Bayer sensor instead of the X-Trans sensor used in higher-level X Series cameras. The X-A5 is the compact version of the X-T100 and without a viewfinder.

It accepts interchangeable lenses using the X mount. In addition to the excellent high quality FUJINON XF lenses, a number of cheaper, smaller and lighter XC lenses are also available. Many of the lenses have optical image stabilization (OIS).

Buy the X-A5 for its excellent JPEG images with low noise at high ISOs. It does not do so well when shooting videos, recording Full HD video at 24fps or 60fps with stereo sound. Since base ISO is set to ISO 400 when shooting videos, video image quality is not the best. Though the feature set indicates you can shoot 4K videos, it’s only at a too slow 15fps (in effect shooting 8MP stills at 15fps). You can shoot slow motion video in Full HD at 60fps or in HD at 100fps. Other video-based shooting functions include 4K Burst and 4K Multi Focus.

The X-A5 does not have a viewfinder and you compose your shots using the 3.0-inch 1.04M-dot Tilt Touchscreen LCD on the back of the camera. Tilt means that it tilts up about 180° to face forward and down 45°. The LCD is also touch-screen so you can tap a point on the screen to lock focus, and use touch gestures to swipe right and left when reviewing images.

When the LCD is flipped all the way up to face forward, the camera automatically switches to selfie mode: The Rear Command Dial switches to the Zoom and Shutter Release function and automatically activates the Eye AF function to lock focus on the subject’s eyes. Additionally, the Portrait Enhancer Mode allows for users to select from three levels of skin tone enhancement with easy touchscreen operation.

The Hybrid AF (Auto Focus) system uses a total of 91 AF points to lock focus on your subject. It feels sluggish in use and works best when manually placing a single autofocus point on a static subject than when using subject tracking or Face AF on moving subjects.

Unique to Fujifilm are the Film Simulations that simulate the B&W and color effects of using a particular type of film. The X-A5 has 11 Film Simulations.

Other features include Continuous Shooting at 6fps, a built-in pop-up “Super Intelligent” flash (GN approx. 4m/13.1ft), a hot shoe to accept an external speedlite, RAW, PASM Shooting Modes, ±5 stops Exposure Compensation, AE Bracketing (±3 stops), Shutter Speed from 1/32000 sec. to 30 sec. (flash-sync shutter speed of 1/180 sec.), Bulb (60 min), 17 Advanced Filters (including “Fog Remove” and “HDR Art”), Scene Modes (SR Auto), and Quiet Venue Mode (for silent shooting).

There are a number of connectivity features that make the X-A5 practical for those who post to social media sites. Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth mean that you can store GPS information, do remote Live View shooting and easily transfer images to your smart phone or tablet.
