QUICKFACT SHEET
The Fujifilm X-M5 is an all-around entry-level APS-C mirrorless camera targeted to vloggers / content creators and first-time mirrorless camera users. It accepts interchangeable lenses using the X mount. It goes head-to-head against the Sony ZV-E10 II.
The X-M5 is compact (111.9 x 66.6 x 38mm) and light (355g with battery and SD card). Though the construction is mostly plastic, the build seems really solid and good. A small grip works very well, though most vloggers would want to add the optional Tripod Grip “TG-BT1” (US $199.99 / CAD $270.00) that does double duty as a mini tripod as well as a convenient handgrip.
The X-M5 features 26.1 MP on a back-illuminated X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor. It shoots 6.2K/30P 4:2:2 10-bit Open Gate, 4K/60P (1.18x crop) and 1080/240P video. In addition, Fujifilm has added a very convenient 9:16 Short Movie mode that records clips of up to 15, 30 or 60 seconds; what’s great is that you do not have to tilt the camera into portrait mode but can keep holding the camera horizontally. To make vlogging even more intuitive and easy, a Vlog mode is available on the Mode dial and that will display the most useful video settings right on the touchscreen, such as Product Priority Mode (that automatically switches focus to the product you are holding up and switches back to your face when you remove the product) and Background Defocus.
The display is a 3.0-in. 1.04M Vari-Angle Touch LCD. Vari-angle means that it folds out to the side and can be turned to face up, down, back or forward, allowing high-angle, low-angle, and selfies shots. The LCD is also touch-screen so you can tap a point on the screen to lock focus, and use touch gestures to swipe right and left when reviewing images.
There is no viewfinder. Instead, Fujifilm has coyly put a 3.5mm mini jack with a black cover where a viewfinder usually goes and it just looks like a small circular viewfinder. It’s a nice design choice and the placement also keeps the cable away from interfering with opening, rotating and closing the LCD. The jack allows you to connect an external microphone. Thdre is also a 3.5mm mini jack on the side of the body for connecting a headphone.
The X-M5 uses the same AI-driven subject detection autofocus as the popular X100VI and X-T50. It has people Face/Eye detection, and subject tracking: Animals, Birds (including Insects), and Vehicles (Cars, Motorcycles, Bicycles, Airplanes (including Drones), Trains).
Unique to Fujifilm are the Film Simulations that simulate the B&W and color effects of using a particular type of film. The X-M5 has 20 Film Simulations available on a dedicated top dial that makes it very easy to give your picture a unique film quality and look.
The X-M5 has three built-in microphones with built-in steady-state noise reduction and wind filter, providing four directional options: surround, front, rear, or front and rear.
The X-M5 unfortunately does not have IBIS (In-Body Image Stabilization) but has digital image stabilization for Movie mode only (with a hefty 1.32x crop).
The Fujifilm X-M5 costs US $799.95 / CAD $1,079.99 body only or US $899.95 / CAD $1,199.99 with the FUJINON XC15-45mmF3.5-5.6 OIS PZ kit lens.
Two accessories are available:
- The Cooling Fan “FAN-001” that clips on the back to allow longer videos without overheating;
- A Tripod Grip “TG-BT1” that does double duty as a mini tripod as well as a handgrip for vlogging.
If this is your first mirrorless camera and/or you want to upgrade from your smartphone camera to a more featured vlogging / content creation camera, the Fujifilm X-M5 is a beautifully designed and affordable mirrorless camera with features that make it easy to take great stills and videos.
