QUICKFACT SHEET
A t the top of Fujifilm’s mirrorless line-up, there are now two models to choose from: 1) photographers who prefer using an optical viewfinder and do discreet photography with prime lenses will go for the X-Pro2, and 2) those who do not need an optical viewfinder and need a workhorse with 4K video will find the X-T2 has better specifications.Like the X-Pro2, the Fujifilm X-T2 is a mirrorless camera with dedicated controls — shutter speed dial, aperture ring, manual focus ring on the premium XF lenses (except on the XF27mmF2.8 pancake lens), ISO dial and exposure compensation dial — that set it apart from all its competitors by giving photographers an intuitive way to directly control exposure settings.
It is weather resistant: dust-proof, splash-proof and freezeproof down to -10°C / 14°F. As well, many of the accessories and Fujinon lenses are also weather-resistant (on the lenses, look for the “WR” label).
What’s New (compared to the X-T1)
- A higher resolution sensor (from 16.3-MP to 24.3-MP).
- 325 AF points includes 91 phase-detection focusing points. Boasts a 0.06 sec. AF speed.
- Focus Lever for quick AF point placement.
- Faster autofocus with AF-C Custom Settings (Single AF mode, Continuous AF and Tracking AF modes significantly improved).
- 4K Video.
- Retains the large 2.36 million dot OLED viewfinder with a 0.77x magnification and lag-time of 0.005 sec, but with improved refresh rate of 60 fps (or as high as 100 fps in the Boost mode), and Automatic Brightness Adjustment function.
- LCD now also tilts sideways (to accomodate waist-level portrait shooting).
- Exposure Compensation Dial now sports a C position for +/- 5 stops (using the Front Command Dial).
- Max. base ISO of 12800.
- Better control layouts (taller Shutter Speed and ISO dials, each with lock/unlock release buttons).
- Higher mechanical shutter speed of 1/8000 sec.
- Focal plane shutter with a maximum speed of 1/8000 sec and a flash sync speed of 1/250 sec. Retains electronic shutter with completely silent operation and a maximum speed of 1/32,000 sec.
- Faster Continuous Shooting with Live View: from 3 fps to 5 fps.
- Continuous Shooting with Electronic Shutter: 14 fps.
- Increased buffer: at 8 fps, from 47 to 83 frames.
- Shutter Release button is now threaded.
- Two SD card slots (both compatible with UHS-II).
- Improved Flash support with EF-X500 flash.
- New ACROS Film Simulation mode for smoother gradation, deep blacks and beautiful textures for ultra high-quality monochrome images, with optional grainy effects.
- USB 3.0.
- An easier-to-use menu.
- Avalability of optional Vertical Power Booster Grip.
The X-T2 is styled like a DSLR, including a faux prism hump in the top middle that really contains a beautifully large 2.36 million dot OLED viewfinder with a 0.77x magnification, lag time of 0.005 sec, refresh rate of 60 fps (or 100 fps in the Boost mode), and an Automatic Brightness Adjustment function so you always see what you are shooting in dim or very bright backlit conditions. Continuous shooting of 5 fps is possible in Live View. A neat feature we like very much is when you hold the camera vertically (for a portrait mode), the EVF information display automatically rotates so it’s easily readable.
Inside the retro body is the Fujifilm’s latest generation 24.3MP X-Trans CMOS III APS-C sensor with no AA (Anti-Aliasing/ low-pass) filter so the camera can capture maximum detail. The sensor features hybrid AF with 325 focusing points (91 of which are phase detection) and improved focus acquisition speed and accuracy. In addition, you can help the AF in its predictive focus by selecting one of five AF-C presets to fine tune focus-tracking of a moving subject. The X-T2 can focus in dim conditions, locking focus in light levels as low as -3 EV.
The expanded AF points should make AF Tracking more precise and the Focus Lever (“joystick”) is a nice addition. You may not miss Touch AF since the Focus Lever is very quick and precise in use. However, if you do prefer Touch AF capability, load the FUJIFILM Camera Remote application and built-in Wi-Fi allows you to use your smartphone or tablet to touch focus and remotely trigger the camera release. You can control exposure settings (shutter speed, aperture, exposure compensation and ISO), as well as apply Film Simulation, use the self-timer and trigger flash.
Since the X-T2 uses the same sensor and image processor as in the X-Pro2, we expect the image quality to be as outstanding. The sensitivity ranges from ISO 200 to 6400 (extended ISO 100, 12800, 25600 and 51200) with excellent low noise characteristics.

New to Fujifilm mirrorless cameras is 4K video recording. You can shoot up to 10 min. of 4K 3840 x 2160 video at 30P/25P/24P 100Mbps bit rate, use the “F-Log” log-gamma option to record a wider dynamic range, and apply Film Simulation modes (including the new monochrome ACROS). You can set aperture, shutter speed and exposure compensation while recording video.
Video can be output via HDMI during recording, allowing you to check footage on a large external monitor. The data can also be directly recorded onto an external recorder as you film in the uncompressed format.
Another new and ingenious design is a three-direction tilting LCD. The 3″ 1.04M-dot LCD tilts up and down when shooting in landscape, and tilts 45° upward (or downward, depending on how you vertically hold the camera) when shooting in portrait.
Not a big deal for some photographers, but immensely satisfying for others, the LCD and viewfinder have been carefully positioned on the optical axis of the lens to give a “sense of perfect alignment from the center of your body to a subject through the lens [creating] an illusion that you have become one with the camera for the ultimate photographic pleasure.”
An optional accessory that some may consider essential is the weather-resistant Vertical Power Booster grip VPB-XT2, basically a vertical grip with duplicate exposure controls and two batteries, bringing the total number of batteries now available to the X-T2 to three.
Equipped with the optional VPB-XT2 grip, the X-T2 can now shoot up to 1,000 shots and record up to 30 min. of 4K movie. A Boost mode feature on the Vertical Power Booster Grip allows all three batteries to contribute at the same time to maximize the camera’s performance: Continuous Shooting increased to 11 fps and reduced shooting interval, shutter release time lag and blackout time.
Finally, there is now the optional dust-resistant and water-resistant EF-X500 external flash that has a tilting flash head, a guide number of 50, support for multi-flash lighting and an FP mode (high-speed flash sync) which allows the flash to be fired at any shutter speed.
There is no bult-in image stabilizer, but many of the XF lenses feature optical image stabilization (look for the “OIS” label).
