QUICKFACT SHEET

The FUJIFILM X-T20 is the little brother (or sister) of the top-of-the-line X-T2. Since the X-T20 has the same 24.3MP X-Trans CMOS III sensor and X-Processor Pro image processor as the X-T2, you can expect the same high image quality and low-light capability. As in the X-T2, there is no optical low-pass (Anti-Alias) filter in front of the sensor, allowing for more detailed images. So, the good news is that with the X-T20, you can get the same outstanding image quality that you can get with the X-T2.

FUJIFILM X-T20 (Black)

The Fujifilm X-T20 design follows after the beautiful X-T2 retro DSLR look and feel, and looks equally attractive in all black or black and silver. It is smaller and lighter than the X-T2. In features, it can be considered as a mid-range mirrorless. The body is magnesium-alloy but not weather-resistant as the X-T2 is. In keeping with its retro styling, there is not much of a hand grip, but it is a two-handed camera anyway, so you are assured a good hold in use. It’s when you just want to carry it in one hand that you wished the grip was bigger.

If you find the hand grip too small for your taste, there’s an optional Fujifilm MGH-XT10 Metal Hand Grip (Black) that (fits both the X-T10 and X-T20, and) provides a more secure hold. You’ll still be able to access the battery compartment and memory card at the bottom without removing the grip. The tripod mounting screw socket is aligned with the optical axis and the bottom face is equipped with rails for use with a quick release plate.

There are lots of direct controls, including 3 precision-milled aluminum control dials: a dedicated Shutter Speed dial, an Exposure Compensation dial and a Drive dial. There are also a Front dial and a Rear dial. Most (except one) of its prime XF lenses also sport an Aperture Ring. So, if you like the way film cameras used to function, this design harks back to the 35mm film SLR of years past giving you dial and ring control to the two settings that directly determine exposure: shutter speed and aperture. Many of the photographers who have adopted the Fujifilm X-Series cameras mention the tactile pleasure and fun they get using these dedicated setting dials and ring.

FUJIFILM X-T20 (Black) back view

The Fujifilm X-T20 has a high-definition 2.36M-dot organic EL electronic viewfinder (EVF) with 100% field coverage so you get a satisfyingly clear high resolution image. At 0.62x magnification, the view is big enough and larger than on entry-level mirrorless and DSLRs. The EVF refresh rate is a fast 54.54 fps with a time-lag of 0.005 sec. to avoid annoying display lag. The EVF shows the effects of exposure settings and Film Simulation (the popular ACROS is available) in real time, so you can take photos knowing exactly how the image will turn out. EVF brightness is automatically adjusted according to the shooting conditions.

The LCD display at the back is 3.0-inch with 1.04M-dot resolution. It tilts up and down. It is a touch screen panel so that, in Playback mode, you can swipe left and right to browse through photos, swipe to fast-forward video, and double-tap to zoom in and out. In shooting mode, you can touch the screen to set focus and/or trigger the shutter (but not to select menu items).

Autofocus uses both Contrast-detect sensors as well as Phase detection sensors for faster and more accurate focus lock. Continuous Shooting is 5 fps in Live View mode, with the blackout time-lag substantially reduced; this allows you to better follow your subject in the viewfinder in continuous shooting. Like on the X-T2, the X-T20 also offers AF-C presets for a variety of different subjects to make it easier to accurately track a moving subject.

The Fujifilm X-T20 can shoot 4K video. It records about 10 min. of 4K video, about 15 min. of Full HD video or about 30 min. of HD video. Its touchscreen display makes rack-focusing as easy as tapping on the subject you want to switch focus to. The camera accepts both an HDMI monitor and an external microphone for full-scale video productions. You’d need a large capacity memory card with UHS Speed Class 3 or higher for 4K recording. Though file size is limited to 4GB, it will allow you to continue recording uninterrupted onto a second file. Film Simulation modes are available when shooting 4K video. You can also change settings such as aperture and exposure compensation during video recording.

The Fujifilm X-T20 has a built-in pop-up flash, cleverly hidden under its “viewfinder hump.” It uses Fujifilm’s original TTL flash control technology (Super Intelligent Flash) to automatically adjust light output according to the shooting conditions. The camera also supports an optional TTL flashgun mounted unto the hotshoe.

Install the free FUJIFILM Camera Remote app on your smartphone or tablet to remotely control the camera. The FUJIFILM app allows you to transfer images to your smartphone, tablet devices or PC.

A number of convenience features is available, substantially extending the creative capability of the camera:

Want to be more creative in-camera? 8 filter effects are available: Toy Camera for a retro look, Miniature for a diorama effect, Pop Color for high contrast and saturation, as well as High Key, Low Key, Dynamic Tone, Soft Focus and Partial Color (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue and Purple). All effects can be previewed as you shoot on the LCD screen.

Of course, being a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, the Fujifilm X-T20 accepts the increasing number of high quality FUJINON lenses, as well as lenses from other brands and vintage lenses using an appropriate adapter. Since the X-T20 does not have in-camera sensor-shift image stabilization, it depends on the optical stabilization built into some of its prime XF lenses (look for the “OIS” label).

There are also a number of accessories available, such as a Stereo Microphone MIC-ST1(Black), Remote release RR-90, Macro Extension Tube MCEX-11, Macro Extension Tube MCEX-16, M Mount adapter to accept Leica lenses, and a number of external flashes and camera cases.

COMPARED TO THE X-T2
Is the Fujifilm X-T20 the right camera for you — or should you go right up to an X-T2? Or, if you already use an X-T2, can the X-T20 be used as a second backup camera? Here are some of the major differences (by no means exhaustive).

Size comparison: X-T2 vs. X-T20

The X-T20 follows after the X-T2 DSLR look and feel, though it is smaller and lighter, but the X-T2 have more and the better controls. The number of controls and their placements are similar to that on the X-T2, making a switch from one camera to the other quite easy. Both the X-T2 and X-T20 have dedicated Shutter Speed dial, Aperture Ring (on select premium XF lenses), Exposure Compensation dial and Drive dial. The X-T2 adds an ISO dial on top of the Drive dial. The X-T2 also has a Lock Release on the Shutter Speed dial and the ISO dial. The X-T2 body is weather-sealed, that of the X-T20 is not.

The EVF on the X-T2 has 0.77x magnification, which gives the biggest view available in any camera, mirrorless and DSLR. The EVF on the X-T20 has 0.62x magnification and, though it’s not as much as that on the X-T2, the view is satisfyingly big enough. They’re both a high resolution 2.36M-dot organic EL electronic viewfinder, with a 60 fps (X-T2) or 54.54 fps (X-T20) refresh rate and 0.005 sec. time-lag. The X-T2, however, allows for the addition of an optional Vertical Power Booster Grip that houses two additional batteries and boosts the EVF refresh rate to 100fps and reduces the time-lag to 0.045 sec.

The LCD on the X-T20 tilts up and down, and the one on the X-T2 additionally tilts sideways.

Though you can expect the same video image quality when shooting 4K (both the X-T2 and the X-T20 shoot at 100Mbps bitrate in 4K), the X-T2 shoots better video image quality at Full HD (the X-T2 shoots at 100Mbps bitrate in Full HD while the X-T20 shoots at only 36Mbps in Full HD). Shooting in 4K, the X-T2 also offers zebra patterns, a histogram, face detection and F-Log gamma.

Even though a higher bitrate is typically indicative of higher image quality, consider also that videos with a higher bitrate will also have larger file sizes, taking more hard disk space to save, longer to upload to your computer and longer to download or stream from the Internet once you’ve posted it to YouTube or another video site. Unless you are making professional quality film, you may not need the higher bitrate.

The X-T2 has more function buttons, a Sync terminal, a Focus lever (AF joystick), and an ISO dial on top of the Drive dial. On the X-T2, the Shutter Speed dial and ISO dial have a lock release.

COMPARED TO THE X-T10
If you are thinking of upgrading from an X-T10, the X-T20 is about 4x faster, with increased buffer memory, better performance, shorter shooting intervals, shorter shutter release time lag and blackout time, improved AF accuracy and Continuous Shooting of 14 fps vs. 8 fps. It shoots 4K video while the X-T10 only shoots Full HD. I’d seriously consider upgrading. Upgrade to the X-T20.
