Famous WWII Nurse’s Passing Reminds of Importance of LIFE Photos

The recent passing of Edith Shain, the WWII nurse in Alfred Eisenstaedt’s famous LIFE photo, reminds us that the iconic photos that shaped the 20th Century–allowing us “to see life; to see the world; to eyewitness great events … to see things thousands of miles away…”–chronicle history better than any textbook ever could. For the first time ever, LIFE is making those original, iconic photos available, offering them at public auction now through July 9.

Bohemia, NY (PRWEB) June 29, 2010 — Partnering with Lelands.com, LIFE magazine is making available rare, original images that have graced the pages of the magazine, via Lelands’ current “Images of LIFE” Auction, now through July 9.

“We are always evaluating new opportunities to market and celebrate our famed photo collection, and are excited to engage Lelands for their online auction experience,” says Jeff Burak, Director of Business Development for LIFE.

The original photos taken by some of the world’s most famous photographers, including Margaret Bourke-White, Alfred Eisenstaedt and Gordon Parks, among others, are marked with the photographers’ stamps and pen notations on the verso.

Nearly 200 lots of vintage photographs chosen from LIFE’s world-class archive collection will be offered. Lelands.com chairman, Joshua Leland Evans, ecstatic over the project, said, “This is the photographic equivalent of opening King Tut’s Tomb. We are honored to be chosen for this project–pinching ourselves to be included in such an historic event.”
