iPhone — The New Press Camera?

The Camera Phone has not been much of a challenge to dedicated digital cameras, no matter how many pixels phone manufacturers keep adding to the camera on their mobile phones. The general consensus has been that camera phones “are all crap.” Until Associated Press photographer David Guttenfelder started taking pictures in the field using his iPhone. Suddenly, the iPhone camera has been elevated to press camera status. And the pictures captured have nothing to do with megapixels, noise, sharpness, focus, etc., all the technical criteria we tend to use to rate a camera, but on the kind of poignant images it is able to capture.
