Light Painting on the iPad

Making Future Magic: iPad light painting from Dentsu London on Vimeo.

What might a magical version of the future of media look like? Making Future Magic is an attempt to answer this question through the use of materials, collaboration, creating something not seen before which is at once surprising, culturally powerful and delightful.

This film explores the playful uses for the increasingly ubiquitous ‘glowing rectangles’ that inhabit the world. As images play on the iPad, they are captured in stop-frame animation. A new photographic technique was developed for this film: Software models of three-dimensional typography, objects and animations are created and played back on the surface of the iPad as movies; the iPad is dragged through the air to extrude shapes which are captured in long exposure photographs of 3 to 6 seconds. In total 5,500 photographs were taken for this video. Only half of these were used for the animations seen in the final edit of the film.
