Nikon announces the development of new firmware for the Nikon 1 V3 Advanced Camera with Interchangeable Lenses

Silent and compact remote camera control with the Nikon 1 V3, which boasts the world’s fastest high-speed continuous shooting and outstanding performance with the tracking of moving subjects

TOKYO – Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce that it is currently developing new firmware, scheduled for release in May of this year, for the Nikon 1 V3, Advanced Camera with Interchangeable Lenses, that will provide compatibility with Nikon’s remote control software, Camera Control Pro 2. Along with the new firmware, Nikon also plans to offer a remote control software development kit (SDK), similar to that available for Nikon digital SLR cameras, in June of this year.

Development Background

Camera Control Pro 2 is remote control software for Nikon digital SLR cameras*¹ that enables remote shooting. It was designed primarily for professional photographers, and is used for remote photography of a variety of subjects, including commercial goods and portraits in a studio setting, nature, and sports.
The new firmware being developed for the Nikon 1 V3 harnesses the characteristics of that camera to achieve silent and compact remote camera control. Camera Control Pro 2 support of the Nikon 1 V3 not only responds to the needs of professional photographers, but enables fields of photography that differ from those with which conventional digital SLR cameras are effective, and greatly expands business applications by taking advantage of a wide variety of camera features, including its compact and lightweight body offering superior agility, the adoption of a high-speed mechanical shutter that is highly durable, the silencing of shutter and operational sounds with Silent Photography, the world’s fastest*² continuous shooting at approximately 20 fps with AF tracking, exceeding the capabilities of digital SLR cameras, superior moving-subject tracking performance, a function that enables storage of multiple images captured using high-speed continuous shooting immediately before and after the shutter-release button is fully pressed, the ability to capture still images while recording movies, and the ability to record slow-motion movies.

In addition to remote control over camera functions, Camera Control Pro 2 will enable remote control over lens zooming when the 1 NIKKOR VR 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6 PD-ZOOM lens is used, further increasing the convenience of remote shooting.
Furthermore, by providing companies that develop software for business applications with a remote control SDK, we expect that practical use of the Nikon 1 V3 will be expanded to incorporation in systems, image processing, academic fields, and more.

The Nikon 1 V3

The Nikon 1 V3 is an Advanced Camera with Interchangeable Lenses that boasts superior moving-subject tracking performance with the world’s fastest*¹ continuous shooting rates of approximately 20 fps with AF tracking, and up to approximately 60 fps when focus is locked, as well as the world’s shortest*² shooting time lag, all in a compact and lightweight body that is extremely agile.
Camera Control Pro 2 support of the Nikon 1 V3 will allow users to effectively utilize the camera’s advanced functions, including one that enables capture and saving of the best moments with high-speed continuous shooting of a series of scenes exhibiting movement, a function that enables capture of high-quality still images by simply pressing the shutter-release button while movies are being recorded, and movie recording functions such as Slow Motion, which records 3 seconds of HD movie footage at 120 fps and plays back over 12 seconds, enabling remote shooting in new fields, and for new applications, that differ from those with which digital SLR cameras are effective.

Camera Control Pro 2

Camera Control Pro 2 is remote control software for remote shooting in a studio or in the field. It enables remote control over nearly all Nikon digital SLR camera functions and settings, including autofocus, shutter speed, aperture setting, white-balance fine tuning, live view photography, and movie recording, from a computer to which a camera is connected via USB cable.
It easily enables such possibilities as allowing photographers’ clients to check their photos from a remote computer, and photographers’ assistants to quickly process images captured at weddings and display them for guests at receptions.

As Camera Control Pro 2 will soon include support for the Nikon 1 V3, it will provide powerful support for photographic workflow with remote shooting in new fields, and for new applications, by harnessing the strengths of the Nikon 1 V3 in a variety of situations, including the recording and analysis of the details of continuous movement.
