Back in July, when Nikon introduced the Z 50, it promised to also release a Webcam Utility to enable the Z 50 and other Z series mirrorless cameras to be used as a webcam for live streaming.
Today, it published the Nikon Webcam Utility Beta Ver. 0.9.0, currently available only for Windows OS.
Webcam Utility lets a Nikon Z mirrorles camera (or compatible DSLR) be used as a webcam when connected to a computer via USB. The camera will then function as a webcam when “Webcam Utility” is selected as an external camera in a web conferencing app.

What do you really need beside the utility and a compatible Nikon camera for live streaming?
Required:
- Nikon Z series mirrorless camera or compatible DSLR
- USB cable or HDMI cable (HDMI requires third-party capture device)
- Software that allows for plug-and-play streaming
- Compatible video conferencing software
- Fully charged camera battery or AC power adapter
Optional Accessories:
- Mount (tripod, clamp, etc.)
- Constant light source (e.g., small LED light panels, Nikon SB-500 AF Speedlight, etc.)
- External microphone (e.g., RØDE VideoMicro Mic, Nikon ME-1 Stereo Microphone, etc.) or lavalier microphone (HDMI connection only)
