QUICKFACT SHEET

The Nikon Z30 is basically the Z50 souped up with features that specifically target vloggers and content creators. It is small and lightweight, and comes with a built-in stereo microphone, a fully articulated LCD screen that faces forward for easy selfies, a tally lamp to let you know you are rolling, and 4K/30P video.

Other practical features include in-camera time-lapse, live streaming, USB power delivery for constant power, Full HD/120P for slow motion, Eye and Face AF, creative Picture Controls for artistic effects and filters, and selfie controls right on the screen. Product Closeups automatically repositions focus onto a product you hold up to the camera. You can download the free Nikon SnapBridge app onto your smartphone to see what the camera sees, start and stop recording and take photos remotely. The SnapBridge app also lets you wirelessly share between the Z30 and a compatible smartphone or tablet.

A Creator’s Accessory Kit (US $149.95) is available optionally that adds an external directional RØDE VideoMicro™ microphone; a SmallRig tripod that can be handheld or used as a small tabletop tripod; and the ML-L7 Bluetooth remote control to control your camera from a distance: start and stop recording, rewatch clips and access menus. An optional Wind Muff (US $9.95) sits on the hot shoe of the Z30 and covers the camera’s stereo mic to suppress wind noise when shooting video outdoors. For constant power delivery during long video live streaming, you’ll need the optional UC-E25 Cable (US $39.95).

The Z30 has e-VR for video, but lacks in-body VR (Vibration Reduction, aka IBIS: In-Body Image Stabilization), so you’ll have to depend on the OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) built into an attached lens. Just look for the “VR” label on the lens: e.g., both the Nikkor Z DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR wide-angle zoom lens and the Nikkor Z DX 50-250mm f/4.5-6.3 VR telephoto zoom lens that are available as a kit with the Z30 have VR image stabilization.
