OpenPhoto, An Idea Whose Time Has Come

Jaisen Mathai, ex Yahoo!/Flickr engineer, has an idea about where your photos should reside: not at Flickr, not at Photobucket, not at Smugmug, not at any photo sharing site — but at your own personal storage in the cloud. This way, your photos are not held hostage by any one service but remains your own. His cloud based open source photo sharing service, OpenPhoto, will access your photos from your cloud storage (e.g. Amazon S3 or Dropbox account) that you own and control.

This is an idea whose time has come. In fact, all other services — email, social networks, etc. — should adhere to this concept. Your photos, tweets, blog posts, forum posts,… all should belong to you, controlled by you. You control the data. You decide what stays private or gets into the public realm. Privacy should be sacred. So, Jaisen Mathai, think big, think beyond photos.
