EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This Panasonic LUMIX DMC-G85 Review is based on a production model. All sample images are unretouched, except where specified.

The Panasonic LUMIX DMC-G85 is a Micro Four Thirds (MFT) mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. It features a 16MP Four-Thirds sensor, a high resolution 2.36M-dot electronic viewfinder with a large and bright 0.74x (equivalent) magnification, a fully-articulated 3.0-in. (1.04M-dot) touch panel LCD, 4K video with a number of smart practical still photo functions, completely silent electronic shutter, built-in flash and Wi-Fi.

Think of the G7, then add all the technological improvements that Panasonic mirrorless cameras have seen since then: a new 2nd-generation 5-axis Dual IS for a 5-stop gain; an EVF with a slightly greater magnification for a satisfyingly larger and brighter view; a new shutter unit and magnesium front panel to reduce shutter shock and remove it as a problem; removal of the low-pass filter for more detailed images; moving the memory card slot from the bottom to a more convenient place at the side of the body; the L.Monochrome mode for more contrasty, nuanced monochrome with a lot of tonality; the availability of optional Battery Grip DMW-BGG1 (also weather sealed) for portrait shooting, more comfortable shooting with long tele lenses, and doubling the number of images that can be shot. The G85 further improves on the G7 by being dust-proof and splash-proof, and is being offered with a better specified LUMIX G Vario 12-60mm (24-120mm equiv.)/F3.5-5.6 ASPH./POWER O.I.S. kit lens, also dust-proof and splash-proof.

More importantly, as we’ve come to expect from Panasonic mirrorless cameras, the LUMIX G85 delivers DSLR-level image quality and performance in a more compact and lighter body than a counterpart DSLR.

If you are looking to upgrade to an Interchangeable Lens Camera (DSLR or mirrorless), check out the Panasonic LUMIX DMC-G85. It is an all-rounder camera for family photography, for those who desire to learn about photography, as well as for the demanding enthusiast. In other words, the G85 will grow with you. It’s a great buy with the 12-60mm kit lens. Highly Recommended!
