Photographer Joao Silva Back In Action

His is a story of courage and resilience that will touch every person’s life. His pictures already have.

The New York Times photographer Joao Silva lost both his legs and suffered grave internal injuries when a land mine exploded beneath him in Afghanistan. Nine months later, he was smiling, walking on prosthetic legs — and taking pictures again. One of those photos, of soldiers and visitors watching a parachute demonstration during the ceremony, was chosen for Page 1 of The Times on Thursday.

It’s not easy, though. Joao Silva walks using a cane and to shoot, he must transfer the cane from his right hand to his left arm so he can pick up the camera. But don’t cry for him. He’s entered this year’s New York Marathon and plan to use a handcycle. He can already do six miles.

You can read more about Joao Silva’s ordeal and recovery at: NYTimes.
