The OM SYSTEM Tough TG-7 has the same 12MP 1/2.3-in. sensor, the same 25-100mm (equiv.) F2.0-F4.9 4x optical zoom lens, and the same 3.0-in. 1040K-dot LCD. It shoots RAW and JPEG, has built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and saves GPS (location), as well as direction, water temperature, and atmospheric pressure data for each picture. It focuses as close as 1 cm from the front of the lens.
It is still Waterproof (down to a depth of 15m / 50ft, IPX8), Shockproof (survives drops from 2.1m / 7ft), Crushproof (withstands loads up to 100kg / 220lbs), Freezeproof (performs down to -10°C / 14°F) and Dustproof (IPX6). In addition, its lens features dual-pane protective glass to reduce fogging in locations with severe temperature differences.
It features very practical and useful Underwater Photo Modes to balance out the color shifts underwater, Live Composite for easy long exposures (star rails, anyone?), Pro Capture to capture the decisive moment, Microscope mode allowing you to display up to 44.4x magnification, in-camera focus stacking and focus bracketing to increase the depth of field of the close-up photo.
Interval Timer and Time Lapse are not new since the TG-6 also has them, but the TG-7 adds Exposure Smoothing that uses exposure equalization to smooth out the differencesin exposure that can occur during long duration interval shooting.
Video is 4K/30P, Full HD/120fps, SD/240fpsP and SD/480fps. Vertical Video means that you won’t need to do anything in post processing to flip your video in portrait mode and can upload it as is to your social media sites.
Lastly, OM SYSTEM is targeting a new target market: the construction professionals who need a tough camera to use on construction sites where it can get dusty and wet, and who can now have peace of mind that dropping the camera or banging it against a hard surface will not damage it. A new Construction Scene Mode with 7 sub-modes provide specific features to make taking all the kinds of pictures on construction sites easy:
- Construction 1 – removes dust spots in the air that become very visible when using flash
- Construction 2 – applies exposure compensation to the background when taking flash pictures in dark environments
- Construction 3 – applies dynamic range correction when shooting high contrast photos
- Slow Shutter – when taking pictures of sites at night
- Panorama – enables you to get the whole site in one panoramic photo
- Indoor – when using flash in large indoor spaces
- Documents – to capture clear images of drawings and blackboards
The TG-7 is also CALS-compliant, saving pictures in image sizes that conform to the CALS standard used by Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.
