EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This Samsung SH100 Review is based on a production model. All sample images are unretouched, except where specified.

Wi-Fi capability in an ultra compact digital camera. The Samsung SH100 is targeted to the entry-level point-and-shoot crowd with built-in “works-like-a-charm” Wi-Fi, “pretty-good” touch screen panel, and really useful features such as a 26mm “perfect-for-large-groups” wide-angle, 130mm “perfect-for-portrait” telephoto, and very good image quality and noise control at the low ISOs. I was pleasantly surprised at how easily the SH100 is able to focus quickly and precisely even in low light conditions and able to handle difficult exposure situations, even besting some more expensive models from competitors.

What about high ISO use? This is one department where you get what you pay for. I don’t believe you’d be disappointed if you restrict your print sizes to regular small sizes and for Web display, but if you intend to enlarge, stay at ISO 80 and 100.

The Auto Backup feature is really neat. After you’ve set it up, it will wirelessly transfer your pictures from camera to PC. If your PC has Wakeup on LAN (WOL) enabled, you can come home after a day’s shooting, click on Auto Backup on the SH100 and it will turn your PC on, wirelessly transfer the pictures, turn your PC off, and turn itself off. It doesn’t get better than that!

A nifty wireless feature is Remote Viewfinder that allows you to use your Samsung Galaxy S Android mobile phone as a remote viewfinder and take pictures from a distance, over a crowd, in tight corners, etc.

There are lots of fun and creative features for the younger crowd, including upload to social network sites Facebook, YouTube, Picasa and Photobucket. Recommended as an entry-level wireless touch screen point-and-shoot digital camera for the socially savvy younger crowd.
