Nearly all digital cameras can process the image from the sensor into a JPEG file using settings for white balance, colour saturation, contrast, and sharpness that are either selected automatically or entered by the photographer before taking the picture. Cameras that produce raw files save these settings in the file, but defer the processing. This results in an extra step for the photographer, so raw is normally only used when additional computer processing is intended. However, raw has numerous advantages over JPEG such as:
- Many more shades of colors compared to JPEG files – raw files have 12 or 14 bits of intensity information per channel (4096-16384 shades), compared to JPEG’s gamma-compressed 8 bits (256 shades)…..

For Sony α7R II full-frame mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera, the firmware update version 2.0 – available on October 19 at https://esupport.sony.com/US/p/model-home.pl?mdl=ILCE7RM2&LOC=3#/downloadTab – will add:
- uncompressed 14-Bit RAW image capture as a selectable feature (uncompressed/compressed RAW) within the menu system, and
- the ability for the α7R II to output video via HDMI during use of the Remote Camera Control software, that enables remote capture from a connected computer.

Sony to Release α7R II Firmware Adding Uncompressed 14-Bit RAW on October 19th

NEW YORK, Oct. 15, 2015 – Sony Electronics, a worldwide leader in digital imaging and the world’s largest image sensor manufacturer, will release a firmware update on October 19th that adds uncompressed 14-Bit RAW image capture to the acclaimed α7R II full frame interchangeable lens camera.
The new firmware, version 2.0, will be available for download through Sony’s e-support site www.esupport.sony.com on the product page for model “ILCE-7RM2”. In addition to uncompressed RAW capture, which will become a selectable feature (uncompressed/compressed RAW) within the menu system for updated cameras, the firmware also adds the ability for the α7R II to output video via HDMI during use of the Remote Camera Control software, that enables remote capture from a connected computer.
The α7S II and α7R II are compatible with Sony’s growing lineup of α -mount lenses, which now totals 64 different models including 13 native ‘FE’ full frame lenses. In 2016, Sony aims to build the native FE lens lineup to over 20 different models.
