QUICKFACT SHEET

The Sony A7CR (aka a7CR, α7CR, Alpha 7CR) is a compact and lightweight full-frame mirrorless camera for serious and advanced-level photographers. The A7CR is not quite the Sony A7R V crammed into an APS-C-sized body; the A7R V is the much better camera by a long shot. Instead, the A7CR uses the high resolution sensor and image processing engine of the A7R V, and can be considered as the high resolution version of the A7C II.

The Sony A7CR features a full-frame 61MP back-illuminated CMOS sensor; Pixel Shift Multi Shooting at 240.8MP; 15 stops of dynamic range (at lower sensitivities); 5-axis 7 Stops IBIS (In-Body Image Stabilization); Sony’s latest AI-based Real-time tracking AF (Human, Animal, Bird, Insect, Car, Train, Airplane); continuous shooting at up to 8 fps (7 fps in Silent Mode); video at 4K/30P (no crop), 4K/60P (1.24x crop) and Full HD/120P; Auto Framing (like on the ZV-E1); a 3.0-inch Vari-Angle Touch LCD monitor with 1.03M-dot resolution; a 2.36M-dot XGA OLED Tru-Finder™ EVF with 0.70x magnification; a single SD UHS-II card slot; and, a Front Dial (which was missing on the A7C). It does not have an AF joystick.

Here, in tabular form, are the main differences between the A7C II and A7CR:

There are a number of connectivity features that make the A7CR practical for those who post to social media sites. Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth allow for remote Live View shooting and easy transfer of images to your smartphone or tablet. You can use the A7CR as a webcam (Imaging Edge Webcam software free to download) for livestreaming.

Of course, the Sony A7CR is supported by a system of high quality lenses, vertical grip, external flashes, microphones, monitor hood, shooting grip with wireless remote commander, grip extension, and software that further expand the shooting system.

The Sony A7CR is supplied in the box with the removable Grip Extension GP-X2 which screws at the bottom and provides an additional few cms for the handgrip.

The Sony A7CR (2023, US $2,999.99 / CAD $4099.99) is easy to recommend if you desire full-frame image quality and very high resolution images (you mainly shoot landscapes, architecture or portraits), prefer a compact and light body, and Sony’s famed Real-Time Tracking AF.

If you do not need 61MP resolution, but would still like a compact full-frame mirrorless camera, check out the Sony A7C II (2023, US $2,199.99 / CAD $2999.99) with 33MP.
