PRESS RELEASE
Sony Introduces the α7 II, the World’s First Full-Frame Camera with 5-Axis Image Stabilization
26 Nov, 2014 16:31 CET
TORONTO, Ontario–November 26, 2014–Sony today announced the α7 II (ILCE-7M2), the next in the revolutionary α7 series of mirrorless interchangeable-lens models and the world’s first1camera with 5-axis image stabilization designed for a full-frame image sensor, giving photographers greater creativity with full-frame quality and cutting-edge camera shake compensation in a compact design.
“Our photographers love the Alpha series and the new α7 II is the next evolutionary step for unparalleled steady handheld shooting freedom– as the world’s first-full frame camera with 5-axis image stabilisation in a compact body,” said Todd Toyoda, Director of Digital Imaging at Sony Canada. “With an operation that is incredibly intuitive and an enhanced Fast Hybrid AF for lightning fast-focusing, the α7 II is the perfect full-frame palm-sized camera that lets you shoot with unrivalled confidence.”
World’s first full-frame camera with optical 5-axis image stabilization
The α7 series offers outstanding image quality in a lightweight compact size, designed to meet the demands of any photographer, whether casual shooter or experienced professional. The α7 range, the world’s smallest and lightest interchangeable-lens full-frame camera system, includes the α7, α7S, α7R, and now expands to include the revolutionary α7 II. With the α7 II, photographers can now enjoy beautifully rendered images from the full-frame sensor with the convenience of image stabilization across the full range of Alpha Mount System lenses. In-camera image stabilization also offers sharper images for those using A-mount lenses on an optional lens adapter.
Building upon the impressive features in the α7 series, the α7 II’s innovative 5-axis image stabilisation dramatically expands your range of expression by compensating for five types of camera shake during handheld shooting of still images and movies: including angular shake (pitch and yaw) that tends to occur when shooting with a telephoto lens; shift shake (along the X and Y axes) that becomes noticeable as magnification increases; and rotational shake (roll) that often affects shots at night or when recording video. Photographers can confidently zoom in faraway subjects, snap detailed close-ups and capture night scenes with minimal camera shake blur. For still images, stabilization is equivalent to up to 4.5 steps faster shutter speed of correction, enabling you to take advantage of a wide range of shutter speeds.
The camera’s in-body image stabilization automatically optimises for every α lens3, including E-mount lenses without Optical SteadyShot (OSS). For A-mount lenses (using an optional mount adapter such as LA-EA4 or LA-EA3), camera shake is compensated for along five axes within the camera body. Users can therefore make most of the beautiful rendering power of various α lenses with the α7 II without having to buy replacement lenses.
Speedy, accurate autofocus with Fast Hybrid AF
The improved Fast Hybrid AF with 117-point focal plane phase-detection AF sensor and 25 contrast detection AF points are placed over a wide area of the screen, making use of the superb tracking capabilities of the phase detection AF giving clearer capture of moving subjects that might otherwise evade focus.
With a more advanced algorithm to detect the subject position, allowing for optimal lens drive, the α7 II has a very responsive autofocus and is up to 30% faster than in previous models4. It also includes an improved motion-prediction algorithm with 1.5 times the performance of previous models in tracking a subject and predicting its next movement. Along with advances in image analysis technology, the camera keeps moving subjects in focus with enhanced Lock-on AF, a feature that optimizes focusing on the subject in accordance with its size.
Superior image quality and enriched video recording functionalities with the full-frame sensor and BIONZ XTM image processing engine
The 35mm full-frame Exmor CMOS sensor delivers stunning images and 24.3 megapixel resolution that is ideal for large-format prints. High resolution and larger pixels enhance sensitivity and reduce image noise for amazingly rich and subtle graduations that release the full potential of a lens’ optical performance. Images are rendered beautifully and more faithfully so that every scene looks incredibly real.
Loaded with an advanced high-speed BIONZ X image processing engine, the accelerated processing enhances images in several ways including: detail reproduction technology which recreates natural-looking textures with a more natural sense of dimension; and diffraction-reducing technology which supresses the effects of diffraction to faithfully reproduce fine details even when shooting at small aperture settings. Area-specific noise reduction selectively divides the image into areas based on patterns (such as edges, textures and flat areas like blue skies), then applies the most appropriate noise reduction for each area to markedly reduce noise and achieve a new level of clarity, even under low light conditions such as night time and indoors.
The α7 II packs powerful moviemaking capabilities in an extremely compact design. By taking full advantage of the 33mm full-frame sensor, BIONZ X image processing engine, audio production features and flexible lens interchangeability, videographers can create movies of breathtaking visual and sound quality. For extremely high image quality and minimal noise, the camera record movies in the high-bit-rate XAVC S format, which was developed based on the professional XAVC 4K/HD format5. This offers outstanding Full HD (1920×1080) image recording at 50Mbps (60p/50p, 30p/25p, 24p) and employs linear PCM sound for high quality sound recording.
The proprietary S-Log2 Sony gamma setting, featured in professional camcorders, creates a 1,300% wider dynamic range for smooth expression of graduation with reduced whiteout and blackout. Other features include Time Code/User Bit (useful in editing), Rec Control (for synced recording with compatible external recorders), marker display/settings, and dual video recording.
Enhanced usability and reliability
The grip is refined in shape and height to support a more secure grasp even when a large lens is mounted. The shutter button has been reshaped and shifted toward the front, to a position that feels more natural for the user. This, along with the button’s increased size, helps reduce camera shake. Shooting comfort and convenience were a priority in design–and now ten customizable buttons can be assigned to any of 56 functions, empowering users to shoot just the way they want to enjoy speedier, more intuitive operation and maximum convenience. The tilting display features a White Magic™ LCD screen for exceptional visibility even under bright sunlight as it nearly doubles the brightness of the display through a unique RGBW pixel structure.
An XGA OLED Tru-Finder viewfinder with a 2.36 million dot equivalent resolution and high contrast, enables faithful reproduction and impressive visibility that contribute to stress-free, intuitive operation whether shooting still images or movies. Photographers can accurately monitor what will appear in their final images because it faithfully displays the effects of various camera settings.
The remarkably compact and lightweight body is solidly built to withstand the rigours of shooting in the field. With an ideal blend of light weight, solid reliability and steady handling, due to a top cover, front cover and internal structure constructed of rigid magnesium alloy. Main buttons and dials are also sealed to help keep out moisture and dust, and an interlocking double layered construction of media and port covers as well as body seams ensures greater moisture and dust resistance. The camera is designed to be used by photographers in any number of situations without having to worry about the safety of their cameras. After the α7 II is switched on, it is ready to shoot 40% faster4than current models.
Wi-Fi and NFC enabled for connectivity with mobile devices; support for PlayMemories Camera Apps that allow the camera to evolve even further
Connect to smartphones and tablets with one touch. Instantly transfer a photo or MP4 movie to your Android™ smartphone or tablet by simply touching it with the α7 II, due to the built-in Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity options. Users can add new applications through PlayMemories Camera Apps, to add new functions to your camera’s existing feature-set.
By installing the new Lens Compensation app, users manually select correction values for lens peripheral shading, chromatic aberration and distortion. This app also allows the model, focal length and F-number of the lens to be written to Exif data even from lenses that do not ordinarily allow it.
