PRESS RELEASE

Sony CineAlta partner with La Semaine de la Critique at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival

Paris, 3 April 2015: Sony is honoured to announce that it will once again partner with “La Semaine de la Critique” for the 68th Cannes Film Festival.

La Semaine de la Critique was launched in 1962 and takes place in parallel with the Cannes Film Festival. It is dedicated to discovering new talent in the film industry by showing first and second feature films from around the world, as well as a short film competition which in the past brought to light people such as François Ozon, Gaspar Noé, Andrea Arnold or James Franco. Now in its 54th year La Semaine de la Critique will present three awards, including the Sony CineAlta Discovery Prize for the best short or medium length film in the competition.

Emotion in Every Frame

Reflecting a commitment to innovation in entertainment, Sony supports film-making. Its range of CineAlta Digital Motion Picture Cameras is specifically designed to serve the artistic vision of cinematographers and filmmakers. Sony wants to continue to encourage emerging talent, helping to support and showcase the art of cinematography at Cannes.

This year marks a turning point: for the first time at Cannes, a cinematographer will be on the judging panel of La Semaine de la Critique. This year the jury will have the pleasure of welcoming the renowned cinematographer Peter Suschitzky (BSC, ASC).

Peter Suschitzky has been shooting films since 1964, notably alongside David Cronenberg. His impressive filmography includes Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, Mars Attacks!, Naked Lunch, Crash, After Earth and, most recently, Maps to the Stars.

After Earth was filmed using the Sony F65, the same camera used by Nuri Bilge Ceylan to film Winter Sleep, the 2014 Palme d’Or winner with cinematography by Gökhan Tiryaki.

The Sony CineAlta Discovery Prize recognises one of the top ten short or medium-length films in the competition by awarding a grant to the director of the winning film.

“We are delighted to be part once again of the adventure of the Cannes Film Festival with La Semaine de la Critique. We want to support the artistic vision of young filmmakers from the beginning of their journey by putting our greatest innovations at their disposal” said Ainara Porron, Cinematography Marketing Manager, Sony Europe.

Rémi Bonhomme, Program Manager for La Semaine de la Critique, also commented: “La Semaine de la Critique cultivates a dynamic, daring, or even impertinent spirit, which ensures that it stands out and is noticed within the Cannes Festival. We see these same values in Sony and are convinced that the brand will be able to support these young talents in the long term.”

On the last day of the competition, 21 May at 11am CET, an online seminar will be held live from Cannes in which Peter Suschitzky will talk about the art of cinematography and sharing his experiences as a La Semaine de la Critique jury member.

To celebrate this continued partnership, Sony is again running a competition on its Sony Professional Europe Facebook page from 3 April, which will give participants the chance to win a trip for two people to Cannes during the festival, as well as passes to the La Semaine de la Critique screenings.
