Sony announces winner of short documentary competition

Judges choose Martin Zarka’s ‘Who are you – Portrait of a photographer’ as the winner of a PXW-FS7 from more than 1,000 entries

Basingstoke, December 17th – A panel of industry judges has today announced the winner of Sony’s #MyNextProCamera competition following a three-month search for original short documentaries. YouTube celebrities from across Europe launched the competition in September by uploading their own mini-documentaries showing the moment they first saw the PXW-FS7 camcorder.

Over 1,000 entrants from around the world created or submitted a short film for the chance to gain industry recognition and win the hotly anticipated PXW-FS7 from Sony. Entrants were invited to create or share a documentary of up to two minutes and submit it to YouTube or Vimeo using the hashtag #MyNextProCamera. The videos were shortlisted by Sony and the winner selected by a panel of judges that included industry experts Pol Turrents, Nino Leitner, Gaby GarcÍa, Den Lennie, Tom Swindell and Emmanuel Pampuri.

After careful deliberation the judges decided that the 2014 #MyNextProCamera Sony PXW-FS7 winner is Martin Zarka, from France. Martin’s winning entry, ‘Who are you – Portrait of a photographer’, explores the motivations of photographer Rémi Chapeaublanc while working on his ‘Gods & Beasts’ project in Paris and Mongolia.

“I was immediately fascinated by Remi and his own way of playing with his environment, with the paradox between who he is and what he shows. That inspired me to capture who Remi was by showing his work, trying to capture how people really are when he shoots his portraits,” explained Martin. “The narration of the film attempts to highlight this concept, first focusing on external elements like Remi’s appearance and hobbies, then removing those elements to only keep Remi’s eye on things.”

Judge Gaby GarcÍa praised the winning entry as “a great example of good composition in every shot, underpinning a very good story in only two minutes.” Filmmaker Den Lennie was similarly impressed by Martin’s work, saying: “it is imaginative, fascinating, and I loved the use of sound. A great narrative structure – brilliant!”

Martin will receive a brand new PXW-FS7 Super 35mm Exmor CMOS sensor NXCAM camcorder with 11x Zoom E-Mount lens and 4K/2K RAW recording options, Sony’s leading camera for one-man-band filmmakers.

Talking about the prize, Martin said: “I’m looking forwards to having a built-in 4K workflow, better ergonomics and the ability to create continuous slow motion shots. I want to thank Sony and the jury members that chose my film; this camera will be my new companion, and I’m excited to be able to try it out real soon!”

Bill Drummond, Strategic Marketing Manager, Sony Professional Europe, said: “The response from the global filmmaking community has been staggering, both in terms of the incredibly high standard of entrants and the number of people who submitted work. I would like to congratulate Martin on his winning entry and thank everyone who has taken part.”
