In September, Sony introduced Venice, the next generation motion picture camera system. Sony Venice’s key highlights include:
Sony VENICE
- Wide 36 mm full-frame sensor can capture images that have the equivalent of 1-2 stops shallower depth of field compared to Super35.*
- New color management system with an ultra wide color gamut gives users more control and greater flexibility to work with images during grading and post-production.
- More than 15 stops of latitude to handle challenging lighting situations from low-light to harsh sunlight with a gentle roll-off handling of highlights.
- Compatible with current and upcoming hardware accessories for CineAlta cameras (DVF-EL200 Full HD OLED Viewfinder, AXS-R7 recorder, AXS-CR1 and high-speed Thunderbolt-enabled AXS-AR1 card reader, using established AXS and SxS memory card formats.
- A 36x24mm full-frame image sensor, designed specifically for the demands and performance of high end cinematography, and can capture images up to a maximum resolution of 6048 x 4032*. By switching imager modes, VENICE can natively support Super35 24.9×18.7mm, 4096 x 3024 resolution (equivalent to 4-perforation motion picture film) and Super35 24.9×14.0mm 4096 x 2160 resolution (equivalent to 3-perforation motion picture film). In other words, VENICE’s new full-frame sensor can capture in almost any format, including full 18mm-height Super35 Anamorphic and spherical and full-frame 24mm-height Anamorphic and spherical*. Almost any aspect ratio can be conjured up: 1.85:1, 2.39:1, 17:9, the list goes on in full-frame* or Super35.

License options for individual production requirements
With VENICE, Sony is giving users the option to customize their camera by enabling the features needed, matched to their individual production requirements. Optional licenses will be available in permanent, monthly and weekly durations to expand the camera’s capabilities with new features including 4K anamorphic and Full Frame, each sold separately.

Sony enables 24x36mm Full-Frame Image Capture upon Launch of VENICE Digital Motion Picture Camera System

Conversations with and feedback from production professionals played an essential part in the development of Sony’s next generation CineAlta motion picture camera, VENICE. In the months after the camera’s September announcement, the immediate demand for Full-Frame capture was clear. Sony has answered the industry’s requests for Full-Frame image capture and, with an optional license, VENICE can support Full-Frame 24x36mm shooting from day one, at the camera’s expected ship date of February 2018.

Filmmakers can now benefit immediately from VENICE’s maximum potential, including 24x36mm Full-Frame 6K recording in Sony’s established 16-bit acquisition format, X-OCN, when used with Sony’s AXS-R7 recorder. In addition to Full Frame image capture, Sony plans an extensive roadmap of features planned to be implemented in future firmware upgrades.
