Sony broadcast landmarks included the 2014 FIFA World Cup Final, which was also streamed live to digital cinema screens for the first time ever in Ultra High Definition.
At the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) in Las Vegas, April 13 – 16, Sony will showcase its latest developments around 4K technology and IP Live Production.
“From lens to living room, Sony provides a full AV ecosystem.“
- The company aims to provide fully integrated end-to-end workflow solutions, including cloud services (Ci), sports production services (HawkEye), IP solutions and Optical Disc Archive systems.
The media market landscape is going through a new phase of post-digital transformation, and at NAB Sony will showcase its comprehensive solutions for the next generation of media companies.
Sony is also set to show how 2015 will be a landmark year for Sony and IP.
IP (Internet Protocol) enables multiple video, audio, reference signals and control data to be transmitted between devices using a single network cable. This simplifies live production systems, reducing installation costs and dramatically improves in the efficiency of video transmission.
- Sony has made significant advances in IP over the last year, including the first 4K over IP broadcast in Europe from IBC (International Broadcasting Convention) as well as spearheading the growing IP Live Alliance.
- Sony’s Networked Media Interface packetizes and transmits HD and 4K video, audio, and metadata in real time over standard network infrastructures. Sony is also developing low latency video codec (LLVC) technology to support the video compression required for 4K 60p transmission over 10 Gbps Ethernet.
- This technology also enhances Sony’s IP Live Production system, making live studio and sports broadcasts more efficient and less expensive. At IBC 2014, Sony announced an alliance of leading companies, including Evertz, for their support for Sony Network Media Interface to allow customers to use an IP infrastructure in their facilities, and support broadcasters through the transition from legacy SDI environments to IP-based infrastructures.
NXL-IP55 live production unit
- The NXL-IP55 live production unit enables multiple video data streams to be transmitted over an IP Local Area Network (LAN).
- The unit enables multi-camera shoots with up to 4 video streams (3 downstream and one upstream, or two downstream/two upstream).
- The system maintains broadcast quality full HD video over the IP network.
Today’s studio cameras use one HD-SDI cable to carry a single uncompressed baseband signal that may require up to 3 Gb/s. Since UHD provides substantial improvements compared to HD, the increased bandwidth for UHD/4K would normally require four HD-SDI cables, and replicating this massive cabling increase throughout the network infrastructure presents nearly impossible logistical challenges. To resolve this challenge, Imagine Communications supports Sony’s Networked Media Interface, a new AV over IP interface for IP-based networking that provides low latency transport of UHD/4K video, audio, reference, metadata and control data.
