Steve Jobs, My Brother — A Sister’s Eulogy

My whole life I’d been waiting for a man to love, who could love me. For decades, I’d thought that man would be my father. When I was 25, I met that man and he was my brother.

Mona Simpson is Steve Job’s biological sister. She is a novelist and a professor of English at the University of California, Los Angeles. She delivered this eulogy for her brother, Steve Jobs, on Oct. 16 at his memorial service at the Memorial Church of Stanford University.

In her eulogy, she reveals a Steve Jobs few know about: the father who frets over his children; the man who loved to take long walks; who worked hard, really hard, everyday; who loved beauty, not novelty; who valued family; who might have liked to become a mathematician; who treasured fun and happiness; who resketched how an ICU hospital room should work;…

It turns out that Steve Job’s life work is not yet finished: He made friends at Apple promise to finish projects; there’s a boat being lovingly completed in the Netherlands; three daughters to get married.

His final words, uttered hours before his death were:

OH WOW. OH WOW. OH WOW.

On October 5, 2011, Steve Jobs went, in his own words, “to a better place.
