The Slate 500. Did HP Get It Right?

Apple did not get it right. Can HP give us a slate that answer all our needs? Let’s see. Two cameras, one still and one video. Strange. USB port. Check. Wi-Fi but no 3G. Strange. Battery life: 5 hrs only. Sigh. Digital stylus to write on the screen. So old fashioned. Windows 7 OS. DOA.

If you watch the ad, you’ll notice it’s slow and the gestures used are just arkward. In fact, they way the people are holding it looks real painful. Either the device is just like that or HP needs to get better actors.

No, HP, we do NOT want a PC in a tablet size. Whoever told you that is probably named Steve B. We want a new kind of device. We’re tired of the PC, tired of Windows. Unfortunately the HP Slate 500 Tablet PC is thus named because that is exactly what it is: a PC masquerading as a tablet that wants to take the iPad head-on.

Oh, I’m sure HP will bundle the Slate 500 with many of its maintenace and management services and even give them out free to their corporate customers. But will consumers buy? So far, Steve J is still the visionary and my prediction is that the iPad will therefore continue to rule.
