The Telenoid Robot Mimics Caller’s Facial Expression

All right, you can call it creepy if you like, but the Telenoid Robot is all about being able to see the facial expression of your caller on the face of a robot. It’s unfortunate that its inventor, Hiroshi Ishiguro, has chosen to create it with only a strange-looking torso, but the idea behind it is quite good. A webcam tracks the caller’s facial expressions and actuators in the robot’s face reproduce them.

Come to think of it, it’s not unlike the virtual characters that eerily mimics human facial expressions (and movements) so well nowadays thanks to the many sensors attached to real actors.
