Angles. Sometimes, it’s what makes a picture. And certainly, when it comes to remote controlled cameras, placed strategically in spots where a human photographer can’t be safely perched, it’s what differentiates the photos taken by pros from the myriad of photos taken at ground level. Reuters plan to mount 11 DSLRs on robotic arms and use remote technology (cable wire or a wireless transmitter) to trigger the cameras. The goal is to catch the athletes of the London 2012 Summer Olympics from extraordinary angles, vying for that one and only unique defining moment.
Reuters photographers Fabrizio Bensch and Pawel Kopczynski tested the technology at the World Athletics Championships in Daegu, South Korea and at the world indoor athletics championships in Istanbul. The movement of the camera can be controlled along each axis and the camera operator can control the zoom lens remotely with a joystick.
