Time Lapse Video Of A Bridge Delivery

A Bridge Delivered from stephen mallon on Vimeo.

The original Wills Avenue Bridge opened on August 22, 1901, well before anyone of us were born. The new bridge spans 350 feet, weighs 2,800,000 pounds and cost more than $600 million.

This is a time lapse video of the delivery of the new Willis Avenue bridge. A four minute video was produced by judiciously choosing images from a pool of more than 30,000 still images. It records the trip from Coeymans, New York (136 miles north of New York City) to E 125th Street where the bridge is situated.

Directed and produced by Stephen Mallon. Edited by Princess Hairston.

It’s amazing that we can build a bridge on land, tug it to its final destination (it would be so cool to be that tug boat operator) and install it there. The photographers got direct access to the ferry and some of the footage is simply outstanding. The photos were taken on the ferry carrying the bridge, as well as on an accompanying vessel(s), oa a bridge, etc. so that we get quite interesting perspectives of the whole operation.

All construction should be documented. Perhaps there is a new market here for photographers to approach construction companies and/or their customers and propose to dicument a construction from beginning to end. This would involve having to visit the construction site once a week or more often, depending on the speed of the construction. But this would also give the photographer unlimited access to some incredible angles and perspectives to shoot from.
