Thom Hogan has an interesting editorial about the direction the DSLR (or more precisely, the digital interchangeable lens camera) market may be going come 2010.
The interesting numbers from Jan 1 to Dec 23, 2009 are:
- Canon (37.9%) and Nikon (28%) continue to lead the group, with Panasonic (8.5%), Olympus (4.3%), Pentax (4.3%) and Sony (4%) making a good showing.
- The micro Four Thirds Digital Interchangeable Lens cameras together grabbed 11.5% of the market.
- Pentax outsells Sony.
- Video not quite the selling proposition.
The best selling camera for each brand: Kiss X2 for Canon, D90 for Nikon, G1 for Panasonic, E-P1 for Olympus, K-m for Pentax and A-300 for Sony.

- A big push for digital interchangeable lens cameras (i.e. DSLRs with mirror removed),
- compact digicams with large sensors (non-interchangeable lens), and
- a return to focusing on the basics that make us switch to a DSLR in the first place: low light image quality and performance (as opposed to the many “gimmicks” that do not directly contribute to either of these two measures).
