PRESS RELEASE

Sony World Photography Awards launch new mobile phone award for 2015

Jan 28, 2015 15:48 GMT

The World Photography Organisation today launches a new award dedicated to mobile photography at the 2015 Sony World Photography Awards.

The latest camera technology within mobile phones has created increased accessibility for photographers. Moments can be captured in just about any circumstance or location and everyone with access to a phone can visually document day-to-day life. The mobile phone category at the 2015 Sony World Photography Awards recognises this new creative freedom and how mobile photography has helped redefine the way in which photographers approach their art.

Photographers of all abilities have just one month from today to submit their best image which answers this brief: You get out of life what you put in. Push past the obvious and see the inspiration all around you. Discover the extraordinary by using your mobile phone to view the world through a different lens.

Entries are free at www.worldphoto.org and must be made before the closing date on 27 February.

The 20 best images will be shortlisted by a judging panel including:

Anna Dickson, Director of Photography, Huffington Post, US
Chris Hudson, Group Art Editor, National Geographic Traveller, UK
Anthony Lepinay, Photographer and Creative Director, France
Alvin Soon, Associate Editor, HWM and HardwareZone.com, Singapore
Evgeny Tchebotarev, CPO and Co-Founder, 500px, Canada

The shortlist will be showcased on the World Photography Organisation website, www.worldphoto.org, and one winner will be chosen via a public vote running on the website from 10-17 March.

The photographer of the public’s favourite picture will be flown to London to attend the Sony World Photography Awards gala ceremony on 23 April and will receive a Sony Mobile product bundle including the flagship Xperia™ smartphone and tablet.

Astrid Merget Motsenigos, Creative Director, World Photography Organisation comments: “With today’s incredible technology at our fingertips we have ability to capture the everyday events that actually form part of the unique fabric of our lives. Most of us document our own history every day with our mobile phones and think nothing of it. This category allows us to look a little closer at those otherwise ordinary moments.”

Judge Anthony Lepinay, a French street photographer who regularly shoots using his mobile adds: “It is a real pleasure to see how photography is evolving with new technologies and new uses. Immediacy changes the way we think photos. We have to be ‘always on’ to catch the perfect moment. And I hope to find some perfect moments with this award.”
